Ryanair passengers will soon have to leave their paper boarding passes behind, as the airline moves to a 100% digital check-in and boarding system starting this week.
The low-cost carrier — one of Europe’s biggest airlines — says the switch is part of a drive to make air travel faster, cheaper, and more eco-friendly. From Wednesday onwards, only digital boarding passes will be accepted for travel.
The airline confirmed that all customers must check in online before arriving at the airport. Anyone who doesn’t complete their online check-in will face an airport check-in fee of up to £55.
Ryanair noted that most of its passengers are already embracing the digital shift, with around 90% of its 206 million travellers using mobile boarding passes.
In a welcome change, those who have checked in online but can’t access their pass on their smartphone — for example, due to technical issues — will now be able to get a free printed copy at the airport, instead of the previous £20 reprint fee.
A spokesperson for Ryanair said the update will “streamline the travel process, reduce costs, and support the airline’s environmental goals.”
So, before your next flight, make sure your phone is charged, your Ryanair app is ready, and your boarding pass is downloaded — because printed passes are officially a thing of the past. 🛫📱
