Customers have reported problems with banking apps and other online services this morning, Tuesday 20 October, as Google confirmed an outage affecting its London cloud region.
Revolut, Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Rightmove and DPD were among the services named in reports of disruption. It remains unclear whether every reported problem has the same cause.
Google confirms cloud service problems
Google’s official dashboard identified an incident affecting multiple services in its London region, beginning at 7.08am BST.
The company reported increased errors and intermittent network failures, with engineers investigating. Google Cloud provides infrastructure that businesses use to operate websites and apps, meaning disruption can affect several companies simultaneously.
The incident concerns Google Cloud infrastructure in a specific region, rather than confirmation that all Google products are unavailable.
Revolut users report payment difficulties
Revolut customers reported problems opening the app and making payments. The bank’s UK service status page showed services as partially unavailable when checked for this article.
In the statement supplied with the original report, Revolut acknowledged disruption across multiple features and said engineers were working to restore access.
Customers’ social media complaints described frustration at being unable to access their money, with some reporting difficulties across more than one banking provider.
Are the outages connected?
Reporting by The Independent linked at least some of the disruption to Google Cloud, but a connection between every affected service has not been established.
Customers experiencing problems can check their provider’s official service updates for the latest information.
This is a developing story. Service availability may change.
