Tuesday night under the lights at Inver Park is never easy, and tonight’s game matters more than most for Linfield.
The Blues visit Larne in the Premiership at 7.45pm, sitting second in the table. BBC Sport’s table shows them on 26 points from 11 games, five behind leaders Coleraine, who have 31 from 12. With a game in hand, a win would cut that gap to two.
The Carrick hangover
Linfield will be glad to get back out quickly after Saturday. They led twice at Taylors Avenue but still drew 2-2 with Carrick Rangers.
Kobei Moore and Matthew Fitzpatrick scored for Linfield, but Carrick hit back each time. Nathan Gartside then saved a Chris Shields penalty as both sides pushed for a winner. It was a point, but it felt like two dropped.
Larne: the champions with games to make up
Larne are the reigning champions. They have only played eight league games after their summer European run, and BBC Sport has them fourth on 19 points. Six wins, a draw and a defeat give them the best points-per-game record in the top four.
That one defeat came on Friday, when Coleraine came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Inver Park. It was Larne’s first league loss of the season, so expect a home side looking to put that right.
What’s at stake
For Linfield, the maths is simple. Win and they’re right back on Coleraine’s heels with a game still in hand. Lose, and Larne close the gap on them with plenty of games still to play.
Steven Gregg is the referee, according to the NIFL.
