Belfast has a rich, intertwined history with horse racing. In fact, streets in one corner of the city are named after 11 Derby winners from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. So, let’s take a look at the history and development of horse racing and its inspired entertainments over the years, as well as some notable courses and races nearby.
History of Racing in the Area
Today, horse racing remains a popular pastime for people throughout the UK. As technology has continued to develop and innovate, this has led to alternative digital experiences themed around horse racing. From virtual sports to virtual reality games, technology has allowed people to engage with horse racing in a multitude of unique ways. The popularity of horse racing has also led to the development of race-themed online casino games.
Take the Slingo Racing online slot for example – this game follows a similar format to traditional Slingo in that it amalgamates the mechanics of slot games and the rules of bingo. However, players also select whether to bet on the red, green or blue horse at the start of the gameplay, of which each has a win multiplier. The horses race along a track dictated by the coloured symbols on the grid throughout gameplay, adding a dynamic element to the immersive experience.
That said, virtual experiences aren’t the only way that horse racing has adapted over the years. After all, the first references to early horse racing entertainment forms date back to around 110BC-60BC during the reign of Conaire Mór, where horses were used to pull chariots during races. The Gaelic mythological Fianna warriors were also said to have enjoyed racing horses, this time without the use of chariots, with references to horse-only races or horse matches popping up in literary texts throughout the centuries. However, the earliest categorically dateable mention of horse racing came in the form of a royal warrant in 1603. But, it wasn’t until the reign of Charles II that these races became more competitive. After this, more forms of horse racing began to emerge, with the innovation of the Steeplechase in the 17th century, and early imitations of flat racing courses becoming popular in the 1830s.
Notable Courses in and Around Belfast
Perhaps the most well known course in the area is Down Royal Racecourse. Used since the late 17th- early 18th century, it is located in Lisburn, Country Antrim, around 20 minutes outside Belfast City. With 13 fixtures throughout the year, some highlights include the Ladbrokes Champion Chase in the November scheduling, as well as flat races in June like the Ulster Derby and His Majesty’s Plate.
Another to highlight is Downpatric Racecourse – the oldest racecourse in Ireland. The first race was held here in 1685 under the charter of James II. The course is located near Downpatrick, County Down, around 1 hr outside Belfast City. Today, only National Hunt racing takes place on the course, such as the Ulster National Handicap Chase in April.
As you can see, horse racing has a rich history in Belfast and the surrounding areas, seeing many changes to racing formats and inspired entertainment media over the years. And, with a racing calendar that spans the year, there’s racing experiences for everyone.
