Multiple-line bets often have names that don’t really seem to explain exactly what they are. This can be confusing for people who are new to sports betting. For example, both a treble and a patent are best that contain three different selections.
So, how do they differ?
Trebles in Sports Betting
A treble is an accumulator bet that rolls over the winnings from the first bet into the second, and then the second into the third provided each of them wins. For example, let’s imagine you’re placing a Paddy Power horse racing treble on three horses to win their respective races:
First horse: Judicial
Second horse: Constancio
Third horse: Glenister
If Judicial wins, your bet remains live and the winnings from that bet are carried over into Constancio’s race. If he also wins, the accumulated winnings are then placed on Glenister to win his race. In this instance, a £1 treble would result in winnings of £59.
It’s important to note, though, that every horse must win for your bet to payout. If Judicial doesn’t win the race, your bet is over and the results of the next two races become irrelevant.
You can increase your chances of winning by betting ‘each-way’. This means your bet remains live as long as your horse finishes in one of the places in their race. Typically, this means finishing second or third, but the exact number of places varies according to the number of horses in the race and any special offers from bookmakers.
A £1 each-way accumulator will cost you £2. That’s £1 for the win part of the bet and £1 for the place part.
Patents in Sports Betting
A patent includes three selections but seven ‘lines’. Whilst any winnings are accumulated, each of the ‘lines’ represents an individual bet.
Using the example from above, the seven lines would be:
1. Judicial to win
2. Constancio to win
3. Glenister to win
4. A double on Judicial and Constancio (both to win)
5. A double on Judicial and Glenister (both to win)
6. A double on Constancio and Glenister (both to win
7. A treble on Judicial, Constancio and Glenister (all three to win)
Once again you can increase your chances of getting paid out by choosing an each-way bet but this will mean doubling your stake.
When it comes to placing a patent, you will need to choose how much you want to bet on each line. If you select £1, the overall cost of your bet will be £7.
Most bookmakers will allow you to bet a minimum of 5p per line. This means you can place a patent for 35p and receive a payout on any horse that wins.
