The Stena Line Belfast Giants held on for a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Sheffield Steelers with Evan Cheverie scoring the game winning goal in a penalty shootout.

Man of the match Mike Kompon also scored in the shootout as well as netting 2 goals in regulation. Kompon opened the scoring at 3:18 of the second period with Ray Sawada doubling the Giants tally at 26:03.

Sheffield then hit back with 3 goals before the end of the period with Jonathan Phillips’ strike sandwiched between a brace from Michael Forney.

With Mathieu Roy sitting a minor penalty for tripping and Sheffield up by a goal, Giants coach Steve Thornton called a time out and pulled Carsen Chubak in favour of an extra skater. With a 5 on 3 advantage Kompon fired home the equalising goal forcing an overtime period.

With no score in overtime the game was to be decided by a shootout. Tyler Mosienko and Mathieu Roy both failed to score for the Steelers and goals from Kompon and Evan Cheverie sealed the extra point for the Giants.
