Cloud Atlas , is basically watching six films simultaneously. Critics will hate it and you’ll hear so many bad reviews. However, I quite enjoyed the experience and I was never bored as the film jumps between each story. I thought it was really well made and intelligent.
Don’t try so hard to figure out what’s going on and make sure you go to the toilet before seeing the film as nearly 3 hours long.
The film tells the story of six different eras in time, with more than twice as many characters who seem to meet each other again in different times, situations and constellations dealing with the themes of love, friendship, revolution, slavery and free will. All that starts out as complicated as it sounds but soon flows rather well switching between the different locations and times somewhat randomly. Of course, with the big actors playing characters in each of the eras, you are looking for connections and the overall piece that may unite it all. The acting is great and while some story sections of the film are more interesting than others, it is overall very gripping, and ultimately deeply touching in its handling of the basic human feelings and questions of love, death and freedom. A huge, brave attempt of intelligent, thought-provoking and unusual Science-fiction that currently seems to fall short at the box office but would deserve so more attention than the brainless movies that usually comes from Hollywood.
