The #BackInBelfast campaign secured a massive £1.5 million in support in January to help turn around the decline in trade in Belfast city centre amidst flag protests. But with news that Botanic Inns going into administration, Cayenne and Auntie Annies closed and many companies still struggling. Where and how was all the money spent? Who benefited the most? Advertising companies with TV and radio commercials or the Belfast pubs and restaurants that needed the business?
The #BackinBelfast campaign also claimed to reach millions with their social media campaign. Yet they have only 9,000 followers. Whilst the unfunded campaign #LoveBelfast & #Takebackthecity have 100,000 followers and didn’t cost the rate payer a penny.
I’m a Belfast ratepayer and seeing reports that an estimated 3 pubs close a week in N.Ireland makes me wonder did we get value for money? or did we just boost the profits of a PR advertising company?
