Top Things to Do in Belfast This Autumn 2026

Golden leaves, cosy pubs, big festivals, Sunday roasts and crisp walks with some of the best views in the city — autumn might just be one of our favourite times to experience Belfast.

As summer fades, Belfast doesn’t slow down. September, October and November bring a packed programme of festivals, theatre, live music, film, family activities and cultural events, while the changing colours make it the perfect time to rediscover Belfast’s parks and outdoor spaces.

And when the weather inevitably turns? That’s your excuse for coffee, cocktails, museums, great food and a night at the theatre.

Whether you live here or you’re planning an autumn break, here are some of the best things to do in Belfast this autumn 2026. Bookmark our things to do in Belfast hub and the live What’s On feed alongside this guide.

1. Experience Belfast’s autumn festival season

Autumn is one of the biggest periods of the year for arts and culture in Belfast.

A major highlight is the Belfast International Arts Festival, returning for its 64th edition from 14 October to 8 November 2026.

More than 200 events are planned across over 30 Belfast venues, covering theatre, dance, music, literature and visual arts, alongside a new immersive arts strand.

The programme brings together artists from Northern Ireland and around the world — keep dates landing on What’s On Belfast as listings firm up, and look back at how the city has carried festival seasons in pieces like our Eastside Arts Festival coverage.

2. Discover Belfast’s brilliant coffee scene

When Belfast starts getting darker and colder, coffee shops suddenly become even more appealing.

From speciality coffee and freshly baked pastries to traybakes, brunch and those first seasonal drinks of the year, autumn is the perfect excuse to work your way through Belfast’s independent cafés.

The Cathedral Quarter, Queen’s Quarter, Ormeau Road, Lisburn Road and East Belfast are all packed with places worth discovering.

Love Belfast tip: Coffee + an autumn walk is one of the cheapest and easiest Belfast days out — start with our things to do list if you want a full morning plan.

3. See Belfast turn gold on an autumn walk

There are few better times to explore Belfast on foot.

Cave Hill Country Park is hard to beat when you want a proper walk — panoramic views across Belfast, woodland, heath and moorland.

For something gentler, try Botanic Gardens (home of the free Ulster Museum), the grounds around Stormont Estate, Victoria Park or Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park.

Love Belfast favourites: Cave Hill for the views, Botanic for an easy city stroll — and keep an eye on seasonal Botanic events like our Mela Day coverage for how the park fills with city life.

4. Take the kids to Cinemagic

Belfast’s annual celebration of young people and the screen is back.

The 37th Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival runs across autumn 2026, with events from September into November — films, workshops, masterclasses and young filmmaker showcases at venues including Queen’s Film Theatre, Ulster Museum, Crescent Arts Centre and Black Box.

Watch confirmed screenings and family slots land on What’s On as the programme firms up.

5. Spend a morning at St George’s Market

There are some Belfast experiences that work at any time of year, and St George’s Market is one of them — with something particularly good about a cool autumn morning.

Grab breakfast, wander the stalls, pick up something local and listen to the buzz. Practical timing is in our when to go to St George’s Market guide.

Go hungry. That’s probably the most important advice we can give you.

6. Have a proper Belfast Sunday roast

Autumn means the return of serious comfort food — crispy roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and a cosy corner.

Belfast’s restaurants, hotels and gastropubs have embraced the Sunday roast in a big way. For a classic city reference point see our Sunday roast coverage, and when you want a proper escape, autumn hotel packages like Galgorm’s seasonal stay put roast culture on a staycation menu too.

Love Belfast tip: Popular Sunday lunch spots fill quickly — book ahead.

7. Make it a museum day

Rain pouring down? Perfect museum weather.

Start with our full Top 10 Museums in Belfast and Beyond guide — Titanic Belfast, the free Ulster Museum, Crumlin Road Gaol, the War Memorial and the Cultra museums are all covered there, plus practical Titanic tips in how to visit Titanic Belfast.

8. See Belfast from the top of Cave Hill

Yes, Cave Hill deserves another mention.

On a clear, crisp autumn day the climb is worth it — views across Belfast and Belfast Lough, with the changing landscape giving you a completely different city. Bring proper footwear, check the weather, and don’t start late as daylight disappears earlier into November. More Cave Hill colour in our Cave Hill feature.

9. Catch a show

When the nights get darker, Belfast’s stages light up — Grand Opera House, Lyric Theatre, The MAC, Waterfront Hall, Ulster Hall and smaller independent venues.

Autumn programmes mix theatre, musicals, comedy, live music, talks and family shows. Recent LoveBelfast stage coverage includes Grand Opera House nights like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and upcoming titles such as Come From Away and Jesus Christ Superstar — proof the city’s theatres stay busy deep into the darker months.

Make a night of it: dinner, then a show.

10. Discover Belfast International Arts Festival

If there’s one cultural date range to put in your diary, make it 14 October–8 November 2026.

More than 200 events across 30+ venues — theatre, dance, visual art, literature, music and immersive experiences. Track the live calendar on What’s On Belfast and use our Cathedral Quarter guide when you’re hopping between venues.

11. Get spooky for Halloween

October means Halloween, and Belfast always gets into the spirit.

Cinemagic has Halloween screenings scheduled from 26–31 October 2026, while attractions and communities roll out seasonal activities. For a classic indoor fright with kids in mind, we’ve covered W5’s spooky seasons before — see W5 Monster Manor.

🎃 Keep checking What’s On as Halloween approaches for confirmed events and family activities.

12. Discover the Belfast Film Festival

The Belfast Film Festival 2026 runs 29 October to 7 November, bringing cinema and special events to venues around Belfast.

Independent cinema, local filmmaking and international productions give movie lovers plenty to explore — and with Cinemagic overlapping, autumn is a serious film season. Watch listings on What’s On; for festival heritage see older LoveBelfast film-festival coverage such as our Belfast Film Festival archive piece.

13. Have an indoor adventure

Autumn weather in Belfast is unpredictable — a wet Saturday doesn’t have to mean staying home.

W5 is an obvious family favourite for younger explorers. You can also try bowling, climbing, escape rooms, indoor golf, cinema and trampolining across the city. Save a few indoor ideas now; you’ll thank yourself when the rain arrives sideways.

14. Find a cosy Belfast pub

There’s summer-pub Belfast and then there’s autumn-pub Belfast — roaring fires, low lighting, traditional music and escaping the rain with a pint.

If live music is the priority, start with our Traditional Music in Belfast guide — Kelly’s Cellars, Madden’s, The Dirty Onion, The Second Fiddle and The Points are all mapped there — plus the wider city-centre pubs with live music round-up.

15. Test your knowledge at a Belfast pub quiz

Pub quizzes are perfect for darker weeknights when you want out of the house without committing to a huge night.

Get a team together and find your local — our traditional pub crawl and best pubs for tourists guides help you pick a room with the right atmosphere before the questions start.

16. Try something you’ve never done before

Autumn doesn’t have to mean hibernating until Christmas — pottery, walking tours, Irish classes, cooking workshops, life drawing, photography, book clubs and talks run across arts centres, museums and independents.

Pick one. Watch workshops and one-offs land on What’s On, and use guides like Culture Night Belfast 2026 as a reminder of how the city opens doors for try-something-new nights.

17. Treat yourself to an autumn staycation

You don’t need to fly anywhere to have a break — book a night in Belfast, dinner, cocktails, a show and breakfast without worrying about the last train.

For a Titanic Quarter flavour, see packages like Titanic Hotel Belfast’s autumn city break, or head out of town for a spa escape such as Galgorm’s cosy autumnal escape.

Why we love Belfast in autumn

Summer gets plenty of attention, but Belfast changes character when autumn arrives — parks turn gold, pubs get cosier, theatre and festival season kicks in, and Sunday roasts return to the agenda.

September brings the final stretch of late-summer events. October is packed with culture, film and Halloween, while November bridges autumn and the start of Christmas season.

So grab a coat, accept that an umbrella may or may not survive the afternoon, and get out there.

Keep following Love Belfast for the latest events on What’s On, restaurant openings, family days out and everything happening across the city — starting with things to do in Belfast, our museums guide and traditional music pubs.
