Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar is heading to Belfast as part of a major UK tour in 2027, with chart-topping singer Sam Ryder taking on the iconic role of Jesus.
The acclaimed new production will arrive at Belfast’s iconic Grand Opera House for a two-week run from 15 to 26 June 2027, giving local audiences the chance to experience one of the world’s most celebrated musicals in a spectacular new staging.
Following highly anticipated West End seasons at the London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the production will embark on an extensive UK tour, opening in Manchester in February 2027 before visiting major cities across the country, including Cardiff, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Glasgow and Belfast.
Sam Ryder Takes Centre Stage
Fresh from captivating audiences with his powerhouse vocals and charismatic stage presence, Sam Ryder will bring his acclaimed interpretation of Jesus to theatres across the UK for the very first time.
The singer-songwriter, who became a household name following his success at the Eurovision Song Contest and subsequent chart-topping career, has already generated significant excitement with his performance in the London production.
An Iconic Musical Reimagined
Directed by acclaimed theatre-maker Tim Sheader, this production reunites the creative team behind the Olivier Award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre revival, which received widespread critical acclaim and became a global success.
Featuring choreography from Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie and design by Tony and Olivier Award-winning designer Tom Scutt, the production promises a fresh and dynamic interpretation of the beloved musical.
Set against the backdrop of the final days of Jesus Christ’s life, the story is told through the eyes of Judas, delivering a powerful and emotional retelling that continues to resonate with audiences more than 50 years after its debut.
Legendary Songs
The musical features some of the most recognisable songs in theatre history, including:
- “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”
- “Gethsemane”
- “Superstar”
Its groundbreaking rock score helped redefine musical theatre when it first premiered as a concept album before opening on Broadway in 1971.
The original London production went on to become one of the longest-running musicals in West End history, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon.
A Major Event for Belfast Theatre Fans
Producer Michael Harrison said he was delighted that audiences across the UK would now have the opportunity to experience the production following the overwhelming response to its West End debut.
The Belfast engagement is expected to be one of the most sought-after theatre events of 2027, bringing together one of musical theatre’s most celebrated scores, an award-winning creative team, and one of the UK’s most exciting performers.
