Some shows have a timeless appeal, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is undoubtedly one of them. Having grown up loving the classic film, we were excited to experience it on stage for the very first time. Even more special was introducing the story to our own children, who had never seen or heard of Chitty before. Watching their faces light up throughout the performance was a reminder of why this musical continues to capture hearts across generations.

The Grand Opera House’s annual Summer Youth Production has become one of the highlights of Belfast’s theatre calendar, and this year’s production once again showcases the remarkable talent we have here in Northern Ireland. Bringing together an incredible cast of 122 young performers in just a matter of weeks is no small achievement, yet what unfolds on stage feels polished, energetic and full of confidence.

Leading the production is Ronan McGoldrick as the lovable inventor Caractacus Potts. He delivers a warm, charismatic performance, balancing humour and heart while guiding the audience through the magical adventure. Alongside him, Meghan McSorley shines as Truly Scrumptious, bringing elegance, strong vocals and genuine chemistry to the role. Together they make the perfect leading pair.

The younger members of the Potts family are equally impressive, bringing warmth, innocence and plenty of charm that helps make the story so engaging for younger audience members. Throughout the show, every member of the ensemble throws themselves into each scene with infectious enthusiasm, whether dancing, singing or helping create the magical world around them.

Of course, no production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would be complete without its memorable supporting characters. Grandpa Potts provides many of the evening’s biggest laughs, while the Baron and Baroness steal every scene with wonderfully over-the-top comedy. Then there’s the Childcatcher—still one of musical theatre’s most iconic villains. Equal parts sinister and entertaining, the character had younger audience members hiding behind their seats while adults laughed along at every entrance.

Musically, the production is a delight. Accompanied by a superb live orchestra, the cast confidently performs beloved classics including Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, Doll on a Music Box and, of course, the unforgettable title song Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The choreography is vibrant and energetic throughout, making excellent use of the Grand Opera House stage and ensuring every scene feels full of life.

Visually, the production is equally impressive. The colourful costumes, detailed staging and clever set pieces transport audiences from the Potts family home to the Kingdom of Vulgaria with ease. Every element works together to create a true theatrical spectacle.

And then comes the moment everyone has been waiting for…

Yes… Chitty flies.

It’s one of those magical theatre moments that still brings gasps from the audience, no matter your age. Watching children point towards the stage in amazement was every bit as enjoyable as seeing the famous flying car itself.

What makes this production so special isn’t simply the spectacle, but the passion behind it. The professionalism shown by these young performers is remarkable, and it’s clear just how much hard work has gone into bringing the show together. The Grand Opera House’s Summer Youth Production continues to provide an invaluable platform for the next generation of performers, musicians and theatre-makers, and judging by this year’s cast, the future of Northern Ireland theatre is incredibly bright.

Whether you’re revisiting a childhood favourite or introducing a new generation to this magical story—as we did—Chitty Chitty Bang Bang delivers everything you could want from a family musical. It’s funny, heartwarming, nostalgic and packed with unforgettable songs, colourful characters and moments of pure theatrical magic.

LoveBelfast Verdict: A spectacular family musical brought to life by an outstanding cast of young performers. Full of heart, humour and imagination, this year’s Summer Youth Production is another triumph for the Grand Opera House and a wonderful reminder of the incredible talent flourishing across Northern Ireland. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
