In the peaceful countryside of Antrim, Aldergrove Cottage is changing the way mental health support is delivered—combining therapeutic expertise with the healing power of nature. Founded by Occupational Therapist Laura Docherty, Aldergrove Cottage offers a trauma-informed, person-centred approach that supports wellbeing across all ages.
This summer, the cottage is launching its Green Connections Group, a nature-based therapy programme for children and young people aged 4–18. Running throughout July and August, the group uses forest play, planting, creative tasks, and gentle adventure to boost mood, confidence, and emotional resilience.
“Nature is an active partner in the healing process,” says founder Laura Docherty. “Green Connections helps young people feel grounded, capable, and connected again—within themselves and to the world around them.”
A Vision Rooted in Lived Experience and Clinical Expertise
Laura trained in Occupational Therapy in Edinburgh and has worked extensively in both physical and mental health services. Aldergrove Cottage, located in her childhood home, is a deeply personal project—designed to offer the warmth, safety, and calm that many traditional settings can’t provide.
“It’s a place where people can exhale,” says Laura. “And from that stillness, real progress can begin.”
Services Offered at Aldergrove Cottage Include:
Individual Assessments
Tailored Treatment Plans
Therapeutic Group Programmes
Perinatal Mental Health Support
Consultations for Schools and Community Services
Aldergrove Cottage works with individuals of all ages, with personalised care plans that empower clients to carry therapeutic strategies into their everyday lives.
Green Connections: Growing Confidence Outdoors
The Green Connections Group encourages children to engage their senses, explore their creativity, and build life skills through outdoor activity. The programme has already shown impact in boosting self-esteem, emotional regulation, and attachment for both children and their families.
“We’ve seen shy children become leaders and parents reconnect through simple, shared experiences,” says Laura. “Nature therapy isn’t a trend—it’s a return to what’s real and effective.”
Spaces for the July and August sessions are now open. Families are encouraged to register early due to high demand.
Looking Ahead
Future plans for Aldergrove Cottage include a book club, creative wellbeing workshops, and the launch of Friends of Aldergrove Cottage—a community initiative for those who wish to contribute handcrafted care packages for visiting clients.
“Mental health care should feel human and hopeful,” Laura shares. “We want to grow a community that uplifts and empowers—one meaningful moment at a time.”
Her message for anyone struggling right now:
“You never have to face things alone. As Mrs. Doubtfire said—‘Help is on the way, dear!’ There is always hope when we walk the path together.”
