This Belfast weekend gets off to a bright start. The Met Office expects Saturday to stay dry with decent spells of sunshine and highs of around 17°C, which is good news for the city’s first coffee festival, an afternoon of outdoor films in Botanic Gardens and a night in the beer tent at Custom House Square. Sunday looks greyer, so get your time outdoors in early.
Weather
The Met Office’s Northern Ireland forecast says Saturday will “stay dry and bright with some decent spells of sunshine though turning hazy at times”, with a maximum temperature of 17°C. Sunday is expected to be rather cloudy, with a risk of patchy rain at times and the odd breezy spell. There were no Met Office weather warnings in force for Northern Ireland when we checked early on Saturday.
Saturday 3 October
Belfast Coffee Festival, Carlisle Memorial. The festival is in its first year and takes over Carlisle Memorial at Carlisle Circus all weekend. Expect exhibitors, cuppings and tastings, talks, hands-on workshops, live music and a UK & Ireland Filter Championships NI heat on the main stage. Sessions run from 9am to 1pm and from 1pm to 5pm on both days. Saturday’s morning session has sold out, so check the ticket listing for the other sessions, which lists prices from £22 to £55.
Outdoor cinema, Botanic Gardens. Belfast Film Festival is bringing a plant-themed double bill to Botanic. FernGully: The Last Rainforest screens at 1pm, followed at 3.30pm by a 40th anniversary screening of Little Shop of Horrors. There’s no seating, so bring your own chairs, blankets or a groundsheet. No snacks or drinks will be on sale at the screening, though there’s a café in the gardens and another in the Ulster Museum. Dogs are welcome on a lead, and under-12s need to be with a parent or guardian.
Rhiannon Giddens, Ulster Hall. The two-time Grammy winner plays the Ulster Hall on Saturday night. The venue lists doors at 7.30pm and an approximate 8.15pm start. Tickets are £44 plus a £3.25 fee, and under-14s must be with an adult.
Oktoberfest Belfast, Custom House Square. The beer tent is open from 5pm to 11.30pm, with oom-pah entertainment followed by Fifth Avenue. Entry is £12 at the door. Our Oktoberfest Belfast guide has the drinks menu, table packages and the rest of the October line-up.
Sunday 4 October
Belfast Bay Run 10k, Titanic Quarter. Runners set off at 9am from the marketplace in Titanic Quarter. Organisers Future Sports Events describe it as a closed-road race through Titanic Quarter and the surrounding waterfront roads, so expect road closures and some disruption in the area on Sunday morning. Exact closure times had not been published when we checked.
Belfast Giants v Dundee Stars, The O2 Belfast. The Giants host Dundee in the Challenge Cup, with doors at 4pm and face-off at 5pm. It comes two days after their 3–1 win in Dundee.
Belfast Coffee Festival, day two. The coffee festival’s Sunday sessions run from 9am to 1pm and from 1pm to 5pm at Carlisle Memorial.
