Restaurant Review: AM:PM Christmas Menu – Time well spent! @cabaretbelfast

I was recently invited to AM:PM restaurant to sample their special Christmas menu, which is available now until 12 January 2014.

AM:PM’s Head Chef Paul Dowds has been at the helm for nearly 8 years.

If you have never been to Belfast’s AM:PM on Upper Arthur Street it’s interior alone is worth a visit. Eccentric, seductive, captivating and all of this reflected in its food offering. ‘We serve traditional French, Irish & European dishes in an unconventional way while always seeking to provide our faithful clientele with cuisine that makes them glow with satisfaction’.

So I went along on Thursday night to start getting into the festive spirit! even though it is still November.

AM:PM is located on upper Arthur street. Less than 2 mins walk from Belfast city hall and the Christmas market which was very cold!

The evening started with a complimentary mulled wine which is available below and on their facebook page. Simply show on your phone or print to claim. After walking round Belfast in the cold weather it was a lovely start to our meal.

Tasteful Christmas tunes and bohemian decorations added to the delightful festive and romantic ambience. It felt really warm and cosy, which was probably helped by the delicious mulled wine.

I chose traditional festive turkey & ham – Irish stuffing with champ, winter vegetable, baby roast & cranberry : £15.95

I could not fault anything and enjoyed every mouthful. Being the first Christmas dinner of the year, the high standard has been set. It was not your usual school dinner that sometimes you get served in some places.

My guest ordered Pan seared smoked pancetta & oven roast pork belly, fondant potato, clonakilty black pudding, mixed nuts, apple & smoked bacon puree with winter jus : £13.95

My guests verdict was that it was the tastiest pork belly he had ever eaten.

Neither of us could settle on one dessert, so we shared two between us. Pavola and White Chocolate dessert….

As you can see, the desserts are more like cakes! Such big portions.

Service was relaxed and friendly. I wish I had noted down the name of our waitress because throughout she gave a masterclass in how to wait on a table. Her timing, knowledge, humour and the right degree of formality made the whole meal flow beautifully.

Christmas is a time of year for comfort and decadence, yet it can sometimes prove difficult to merge these two feelings. AM:PM have managed to grab hold of both of these feelings and delicately transformed them into a beautiful tasting menu.

If you haven’t booked your Christmas party yet and you fancy somewhere cosy that’s a bit different from the usual city centre venues, or even if you just fancy a festive meal with family or friends, I’d highly recommend trying AMPM. We had the Seasonal menu, but the dishes would work just as well for any time of the year. There is other dishes that I saw fellow diners enjoying, and I’ll certainly be heading back in the New Year, if not before to try more of what they have on offer.

  1. Have to disagree re portion size and value. We got two chicken from the menu and it was so inadequate l ended up eating half the burger of the other diner who was with us. The chorizo volute was bland and took up the whole plate, definitely not worth £14 maybe £7. Also they charged our table of three a service charge of 10% at £8.31 despite leaving a tip for the excellent waitress. We only noticed when we left as to why the bill was so dear. I have tweeted and facebooked their page about it and they ignored me but it sparked a healthy debate on my own facebook page and in work on friday which is the building opposite them that has 600 staff but l only told about 30/40 on my team. Wont be back which is disappointing as the venue is great bt the food and pricing and after service let it down.
