The Stena Line Belfast Giants completed a frustrating weekend in Nottingham, losing 1-0 to the Panthers with Chris Lawrence’s game winning goal coming with only 49 seconds raining in the game.
The loss came less than 24 hours after both sides fought out an entertaining game on Saturday, which also saw the home side take the 2 points on offer with a 4-3 win after penalty shots.
The Giants now lie in fourth place in the Elite League, four points behind the 1st placed Panthers, with the Nottingham side having played one game less.
Both teams started with the same line-ups as on Saturday, with Belfast missing Kevin Saurette and Stephen Murphy through injury. Panthers outshot the Giants in the opening two periods, but it was 0-0 after 40 minutes with both netminders making vital saves.
The game through up a moment of controversy at 50.43 when Cody Brookwell and Robert Farmer were ejected from the game, the Giants d-man for Spearing and Farmer for leaving his bench to join the ensuing melee.
However, the decisive moment came with only 49 seconds to go when Chris Higgins fed the puck to Lawrence who fired past Chubak and into the Giants net to clinch a second win in as many nights for the Panthers.
The Stena Line Belfast Giants return to action on Friday when they take on their title rivals, the Cardiff Devils, at the Odyssey Arena – face-off 7pm.
