New BBC comedy Committed brings a cross-Atlantic love story to County Down

A brand-new romantic comedy is heading to our screens — and it’s putting Northern Ireland front and centre in a story that’s equal parts romance, culture clash and pure local humour.

BBC Northern Ireland and CBC have officially greenlit Committed, a 10-part series starring Dustin Milligan (Schitt’s Creek) and local favourite Diona Doherty (Derry Girls, Blue Lights).

From Toronto to rural Northern Ireland — and nothing goes to plan

The story follows Peter Hooley, a recently divorced Canadian accountant who thinks he’s found “the one” after a whirlwind weekend romance in Toronto.

So what does he do? He jumps on a plane, crosses the Atlantic, and lands in Northern Ireland ready to declare his love.

There’s just one problem…

The quiet rural village he arrives in is nothing like he imagined.

Expect eccentric locals, big personalities, and the kind of humour Northern Ireland does best — sharp, self-aware, and slightly chaotic.

Filming underway in County Down

Production is already in full swing, with scenes being shot across County Down, alongside additional filming in Canada.

And it’s not just the scenery that’s impressive — the cast is stacked with familiar faces, including:

  • Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones, Derry Girls)
  • Dan Gordon (Blue Lights)
  • Seamus O’Hara (Say Nothing)

A love story… after the big romantic gesture

What makes Committed different is its angle.

This isn’t about getting the girl — it’s about what happens after the big romantic moment, when real life kicks in.

The series explores:

  • Culture clashes between Canada and Northern Ireland
  • The reality behind grand gestures
  • And how stepping outside your comfort zone can completely change your life

Showcasing Northern Ireland to the world

Behind the scenes, the project is a major collaboration between international production companies, with support from Northern Ireland Screen.

For BBC Northern Ireland, it’s another opportunity to spotlight local talent and storytelling on a global stage — while giving audiences abroad a taste of our unique humour and character.

When can we watch it?

Committed is expected to premiere in winter 2027 on CBC (and its streaming platform CBC Gem), with a BBC Northern Ireland release around the same time.

This one has serious potential — strong cast, local setting, and a concept that travels well. If it lands right, it could easily become the next big export alongside shows like Derry Girls.
