George Best Belfast City Airport and McKinty and Wright Solicitors call on local businesses to #DoIt4Mencap in the 2016 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon

With the 2016 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon just three months away, two Belfast businesses are ready to pass the baton in aid of Mencap.

Staff members from the George Best Belfast City Airport and McKinty and Wright Solicitors will be participating in the relay event in aid of Mencap and they are calling on more Belfast companies to do the same.

The official charity of the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon for the next three years, Mencap supports people with a learning disability and their families. All funds raised through the marathon and its associated events will go towards enhancing Mencap’s services and allowing them to provide support to even more children and young people with a learning disability throughout Northern Ireland.

Justine Curran, Area Fundraising Manager, Mencap said:

“We are so grateful to businesses like the Belfast City Airport and McKinty and Wright for signing up a relay team for the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon. The funds raised will help enhance the crucial services we offer, such as after school programmes and respite days. We also plan to launch a family support service for families who have a child born with a learning disability.

“The support of organisations such as Belfast City Airport and McKinty and Wright, as well as the Grand Opera House and Murdock Builders Merchants, will make our services more accessible to people in need throughout Northern Ireland. We hope other businesses follow the example these companies have set by signing up a relay team to #doit4mencap!”

An avid supporter and ambassador for Mencap, Belfast City Airport Chief Executive Brian Ambrose chaired Mencap’s Big Step Forward Appeal, a public appeal to raise £1.7million to build, equip and run Mencap’s new centre in Newtownbreda. Brian said he has seen first-hand the work Mencap has done for the local community and he is elated Mencap is the official charity of the marathon. Brian commented:

“I’ve been involved with Mencap for a number of years and I have seen the great work the charity carries out to support those with a learning disability across Northern Ireland.

“The airport has invested extensively in local groups and projects in recent years through its Community Fund, so it is fantastic to be able to continue this support through our staff’s participation in this year’s Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon. As well as putting together a team, we will also support Mencap by handing out refreshments at one of the marathon’s cheering stations which is located just outside the airport.”

McKinty and Wright has been another big supporter of Mencap in the last two years and the Belfast law firm has signed up teams for both the relay and 8 Mile Walk in aid of Mencap. A legal executive at McKinty and Wright, Michelle Mooney, is taking part in the 8 Mile Walk. She added:
“Supporting Mencap has been an incredibly rewarding experience for our organisation. We have greatly enjoyed learning about the organisation’s services and meeting the people Mencap benefits. We will be there on marathon day running for Mencap, and we can’t wait to see how many other businesses cross the finish line for this important organisation.”
