Global technology company Huawei and ‘The Snapys’ have reimagined their highly successful instagram photographic competition which enters its 3rd year as Huawei Creatives, an initiative to sponsor and celebrate Irish creative talent.

The 2018 Huawei Creatives keeps a competition format offering category winners a Huawei Mate 10 Pro and a the prize for the overall winner will be a once in a lifetime opportunity but “yet to be confirmed”

To mark the launch Huawei have released some interesting facts about Ireland’s creativity.

Research conducted by the company found that 68% of Irish people say that creativity is important to them and 60.9% of Irish people are looking to achieve more in 2018.  The creativity infused in Ireland links perfectly with Huawei Creatives which seeks to create a platform to showcase up and coming creative Irish people.

Building on the success of past years where ‘The Snapys’ reached over 3 million interactions, this year’s competition also brings two exciting new additions, the People’s Choice awards and the Judge’s Choice awards. Twenty people will be chosen for each category – 10 by popular vote and 10 by a nonpartisan judging panel based purely on talent and creativity, with votes not taken into consideration.  The initial 20 shortlisted in each of 13 categories will be narrowed down to a category winner who will receive a Huawei Mate 10 Pro, the company’s new flagship device. The overall winner will then be chosen from the 13 category winners by an international judging panel.

Commenting on this year’s shake up, Zena Ross, Huawei Ireland’s Marketing Manager says, “we wanted to work with The Snapys to elevate the competition’s purpose. This year will take a new angle where each category will be designed around an existing creative community – it is not just about photography but about empowering and recognising all forms of creativity and passion.”

Zena went on to explain Huawei’s interest in the competition: “At Huawei we are known not just for our phenomenal cameras and our partnership with Leica but also for our support of innovation and creativity both in our products and in communities across the globe and we see Huawei Creatives as the perfect medium for encouraging Irish creatives.”

The inclusion of new categories including Social Entrepreneur, Change Makers and Artistic Minds in the overall13 available categories speaks to the creators’ determination to develop the competition and provide a springboard for up and coming influencers according to Conor Lynch CEO of Connector who developed The Snapys:  “This time around the competition is about creativity in a broader sense, it is not a popularity contest where the person with most followers wins. Rather it is about identifying talent and ensuring that talent is recognised and rewarded; we’re really excited to see what this year’s entrants will bring to the table.”

Last year’s winners are already making waves in the photography community with last year’s fashion category winner, David Gannon, went on to win DCU’s Hybrid Photographer of the Year. In addition, Liz Stowe, the Huawei Snapys overall winner, was sent to Shenzhen, China in January 2017 to capture nine images over the week, coached by 4 mentors and is a real talent to look out for over the coming years.
