Golden Cow survey reveals Northern Irish golden get-together habits
This Easter the people of Northern Ireland will throw out the celebrity cookbooks they got for Christmas in favour of serving up the family favourite, traditional roast dinner, according to a survey by NI’s favourite butter brand, Golden Cow.
Despite the start of 2016 being a bumper time for purchasing Nigella or Heston’s latest tomb, with a 15% rise in cookbook sales*, the people of Northern Ireland have spoken and it won’t be their fancy fare on the Easter dinner table. Instead the majority of us (64%) will opt in favour of granny’s family recipe, carried down through generations, versus only 15% following a recipe from a cookbook.
Additionally, in spite of claims that half of all women over 55 in the UK go online for recipe inspiration*, the Northern Irish are different! Golden Cow research reveals that only 10% seek inspiration from online recipes – we turn to our mums and grannies instead.
The research comes in the lead up to the Easter holidays and was commissioned as part of Golden Cow’s ‘Share the Love’ campaign to help launch its latest initiative, ‘Golden Get-Togethers’, which aims to provide families with the ideal opportunity to spend time together this Easter and enjoy great family moments.
Golden Cow’s survey also found that although 46% of respondents claim their family get-togethers have changed over time, often complaining that busy schedules prohibit us from spending as much as time with our families as we would perhaps like, Easter still prevails as a non-negotiable when it comes to getting together with our loved ones for 80% of us.
Roast dinners will always be considered king of the Easter dinner table in Northern Ireland with 65% of us still opting for this age-old favourite. Surprisingly a BBQ was second choice with 12% of us trading in the roasting tray for the grill at golden get-togethers with trademark bad weather not putting us off.
Even though mums are still our leading favourite for preparing the Easter spread; dads come in second with 19%. However its dads who trump the running for dish duty at 32% while grandads and uncles are the most work-shy when cleaning up the dishes are involved with only 3% lending a helping hand. (We’re sure they aren’t so shy of the dishes when they’re full of yummy food though!)
Golden Cow know the importance of tradition and so do the families of Northern Ireland with one in ten enjoying a walk before dinner to work up an appetite and one in ten also pushing up the sleeves and getting competitive over a board game or quiz after dinner.
