Give My Head Peace live review — still sharp, still ours

There’s a moment near the end of Give My Head Peace where Ma lands the kind of twist on Da that reminds you exactly why this show has lasted — it’s mischievous, perfectly timed, and rooted in that unmistakable Northern Irish instinct to never let anyone get too comfortable.

And that pretty much sums up the night.

Bringing the long-running sitcom to the stage, Give My Head Peace proves it’s not just surviving — it’s still got bite. This isn’t a nostalgia act wheeled out for easy laughs. It feels current, reactive, and very aware of the room it’s playing in.

The biggest surprise of the night is just how well the format works live. Tim McGarry anchors the show with a standout stand-up section in the middle that genuinely lifts everything. It’s sharp, topical, and lands with the kind of confidence that comes from someone who knows exactly how their audience ticks. The laughs aren’t polite — they’re proper, loud, rolling laughs.

And then there’s the characters people came for. Pastor Begbie is exactly what you want him to be — no reinvention, no softening, just brilliantly himself. It’s that familiarity that the show leans into, but crucially, it never feels lazy.

The audience tells its own story. A real mix — longtime fans, newer faces, different ages — all laughing at the same beats. That’s not easy to pull off with a show that’s been around this long, but it speaks to how deeply embedded this kind of humour is here. It’s specific, it’s local, and it doesn’t try to explain itself.

What makes the night work is that it still feels relevant. The jokes land because they’re grounded in now, not recycled from years ago. There’s a risk with shows like this that they drift into comfort and nostalgia — this one doesn’t.

Instead, it leans into what it does best: big personalities, quick-fire digs, and that uniquely Northern Irish way of saying the thing everyone’s thinking — just funnier.

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth going: it is. Not because it reminds you of what the show used to be, but because it proves it still knows exactly what it is.

And that’s why it works
