Theater Review: “Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas” at Lyric Theatre
As the festive season approaches, the Lyric Theatre presents an extraordinary production, “Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas,” featuring the comedic brilliance of Grimes & McKee. This show, running from December 1, 2023, to January 6, 2024, is a delightful blend of holiday cheer and spine-tingling mystery, ensuring an evening of both laughter and chills.
Imagine a Christmas Eve set in a mysterious ancestral home, complete with a TV psychic, Nancy Nugent, ready to unravel its secrets live. However, the spirits she encounters might be more than she bargained for. This play weaves a tale filled with hidden secrets, elusive characters, and a dash of festive fright, keeping audiences captivated.

The performance is a testament to the evolving tradition of Grimes and McKee at the Lyric, presenting a more structured narrative than their previous works. While I found myself missing the spontaneous hilarity of their past shows, the inclusion of Ali White and Nicky Harley, along with their clever renditions of ABBA and Gloria Gaynor songs, added a fresh and enjoyable twist.
Jimmy Fay, Executive Producer at Lyric Theatre, encapsulates the spirit of the season with this production. He remarks, “Watching Grimes and McKee at the Lyric signals the official start of the holiday season. This spooky, humorous Christmas comedy, directed by the talented Frankie McCafferty, is sure to bring festive thrills and hearty laughs. A merry Christmas indeed!”
Supported by Arts Council of Northern Ireland National Lottery funding and Belfast City Council, “Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas” promises to be a memorable addition to your holiday festivities. Tickets start at £12.50 and are available on the Lyric Theatre’s website. Don’t forget to follow @LyricBelfast on social media for more updates.
