A rising star of the music scene is swapping beats for ballrooms as Sam Hunter steps into one of literature’s most iconic roles.
Sam, who plays the brooding Mr Darcy in the upcoming musical Pride and Prejudice and 80’s Hits! at the Waterfront Hall, is no stranger to performing – but this marks an exciting new chapter in his career.
Born to entertain, Sam began singing with the Australian Youth Choir, performing in community halls and theatres across New South Wales before going on to study drama and dance. Originally from Brisbane, he moved to Belfast in 2024 to explore his Irish roots, bringing with him a successful background as a hip-hop artist and live performer.
It was a chance conversation that set him on the path to Pemberley. Earlier this year, musical director Leah Jordan encouraged him to audition for the role of Mr Darcy – a challenge Sam embraced wholeheartedly.
Now, he is revelling in the transition from music to musical theatre, bringing a fresh energy and depth to the famously complex character.

Writer and director Kerry Rooney has praised Sam Hunter’s commitment to the role:
“Sam has thrown himself into Darcy with incredible dedication. He brings a natural charisma to the stage, but what’s been most impressive is his willingness to really explore the character – the pride, the vulnerability and the emotional journey. He’s not afraid to take risks, and that’s exactly what this role needs.”
Pride and Prejudice and 80’s Hits!, which premieres at the Waterfront Hall in May, reimagines Jane Austen’s classic love story with a vibrant 1980s soundtrack, blending romance, humour and iconic pop hits into a bold, feel-good theatrical experience.
For Sam, the role represents more than just a debut – it’s a reinvention.
As Belfast prepares to welcome a new kind of Darcy, audiences can expect a performance that is as dynamic and unexpected as the show itself, which promises big heart, big music and a leading man very much on the rise.
Pride and Prejudice and 80’s Hits! premieres at the Waterfront Hall from Thursday 7th to Saturday 9th May. Tickets at: www.waterfront.co.uk
