The countdown starts here – just 32 days until Féile25 – the biggest party in Belfast in 2013!
In just a month’s time, Ireland’s biggest, and most vibrant community festival not only kicks off its largest celebration ever, but hits the big “25” with a packed programme of style AND substance.
Féile an Phobail has been enlivening, entertaining and educating West Belfast and beyond with its rich mix of music, literature, spoken word, tours, talks, community events and street parties this past 25 years, and now, from the 1st– 11th August, the highlight of the city’s summer calender marks its landmark birthday with an array of international acts and local legends, not to mention hundreds of events right across the city.
The Happy Mondays, Faithless, Chicane, Agneli & Nelson, Patrick Kielty, Mickey Bartlett, Paddy McDonnell, The Beat, The Charlatans, Damien Dempsey, Joby Fox, Ulster Orchestra and the Priests, Grainne Holland Band, Echo Raptors, The Coronas, Walking on Cars, Cara Dillon, Sharon Shannon, Jordon O’Keefe, The Wolfe Tones, Gary Óg and Rebel Hearts, are among those very special guests joining in the Féile 25th birthday celebrations, as West Belfast prepares to throw open its doors to the world and rock, roll, laugh, listen, party and play!
As well as the headlining music and comedy acts, Féile25 will play host to a diverse range of dance (from Irish traditional to hip-hop), literature, drama, visual art, family fun, sports events, tours and walks, discussions and debates and Irish language events. There’s a staggering total of over 250 events set to take place over eleven days, at 50 venues across West Belfast / Gaeltacht Quarter and the City Centre, including family favourites such as the annual traditional Carnival Parade and a host of other events to appeal to kids big and small.
The spoken and printed word is represented by a dizzying array of talent, from Breadboy, Tony McCauley’s searing follow-up to his critically acclaimed boyhood memoir Paperboy, to Just another Statistic , a pitch-black witty yet moving look at suicide by Alicia Daly. I’ll Tell me Ma, The Sweety Bottle, short story competition, Scribes at the Rock and drama workshops are amongst the other literary and dramatic treats of Féile25, not to mention the exclusive premiere of Two Nights with George, following on from where the previous Féile smash A Night wth Geroge left off.
The 25th birthday programme is completed with an impressive range of sports, community and other events in the spaces and places througout West Belfast, a truly eclectic line-up which mirrors the impressive wild diversity of talents and creativity that has made the west of the city such a culturally rich hotbed.
Féile an Phobail Director Kevin Gamble said:
“A quarter of a century of inclusive engagement with communities from within and outside West Belfast is a great achievment in anybody’s book. But I’m hugely proud to say, that as Féile an Phobail has grown year in year out, it has also stayed resolutely true to its roots. In true Féile style, our 25th birthday is going to be a celebration of the very best of the West, and we’re delighted to have so many big names taking part alongside the very best local talent. As ever we endeavor to make our events accessible to all, whether they be free or affordably priced. And now, welcome to the biggest party in Belfast in 2013, and to the most exciting line-up Féile has ever seen!”
