Belfast is a thriving and famous city of Northern ireland. Being the capital, it is fast-paced, and the citizens stay up to trends in keeping the stride. In such a hurried town, people sometimes feel under pressure or some things that are damaging become normalized, like the act of smoking.

Northern Ireland is known for its population of smokers being a lot higher than the rest of the UK. The smoking rates destructively increased in the 2014 to 2016 time period. In 2014, the proportion was as high as 22% of the overall population. However, it has only decreased since then as a lot of adults, and some adolescents were experiencing complications like cancer due to the effects.

Thankfully, the government recognized the problem and has then been introducing public and private sectors for addiction relief all over the country. There has also been increased attention to the NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) and other treatments in recent years, and more and more smokers are approaching it and getting help.

The decline in the Smoking Rates

Ever since the devastating facts of an increase in the smoking population in Belfast, there had been successful attempts to educate the public and lay them off the habit. In 2012 a tobacco control strategy was set that ignited several measures for preventing child smoking normalization and helping adults quit. This strategy is said to last until 2022 and is showing promising results.

When in 2016, the recording of smokers was 19% over the whole city, it reduced to 16.5% in 2018. People set quit dates in order to succeed, and most of the registered smokers successfully did it. Like according to the Department of Health website, 21,779 people signed up for quit dates during 2014/15, which resulted in a drop in the smokers’ population mentioned above.

How Vaping Aided

There were several treatment therapies instilled under the tobacco Control Strategy that are still helping smokers find their peace again. Other than the Nicotine Replacement Therapy, several smokers also found vaping to be useful. And ever since then, the vaping market has also progressed and made a prominent mark in the city. These days people are able to cut out tobacco for e-liquids instead that uses unharmful liquids and chemicals, providing a similar look and feel of a cigarette to help quit the drug. The population of Belfast has evidently increased vaping and lessened tobacco usage according to the news article from Belfast Telegraph. Reportedly in 2014, where vape users were 3.7%, in 2016, the percentage increased to 5.6% and continues to grow.

Need for More Progress

Smoking kills people in Belfast more than any other dangerous habit. A big crowd of people contract lung and mouth cancer due to it and die miserably. Due to the measures taken in the previous years, smokers begin to quit in huge numbers, but now the rate seems to be going downward. If anything, there hasn’t been a rise in people quitting tobacco, but the reports have been quite linear. This could be due to two reasons, normalization of the use and advertisement to popularize the products.

Tobacco Advertisement

Cigarettes are advertised at a public level in all parts of the world. From TV to Point of Sale (POS) to magazines, cigarettes are common to be perceived. This act for selling of the harmful chemical is, in turn, normalizing its use in adults and children alike. Minors, without the knowledge of the product, tend to use it after sighting the magnificent displays in retail stores or the hands of celebrities in magazines. All these activities, in addition to several others, make cigarettes a part of society and a necessity for some individuals that make them succumb to it and ruin their health
