Councillor Arder Carson has teamed up with learning disability charity Mencap to call on the public to get their runners on and support local children and young people and their families by taking part in the 2016 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon.
Belfast City Council is asking potential participants to take part in the full marathon, the team relay, the 8 Mile Walk or the Fun Run in aid of Mencap, the event’s official charity partner for the next three years. While the marathon is taking place in Belfast, Mencap offers a network of support services across Northern Ireland for children and young people with a learning disability and their families.
Vanessa Elder, Head of Regional Fundraising, Mencap Northern Ireland said:
“We are delighted to be partnering with the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon, and we hope the residents of the Belfast area will sign up and help us raise the vital funds needed in order for us to expand on the services we offer to young people with a learning disability.
“We work in cities and towns across Northern Ireland and money raised from the marathon will go toward offering more community programmes, such as after school clubs, summer play schemes and respite days. We also intend to launch a new family support service ensuring that when a child is born with a learning disability we are there to support them and their family.”
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Arder Carson commented:
“We can’t wait to see how many people from Belfast get out and support Mencap in this year’s Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon! The services and programmes Mencap offer are crucial to our area, so we are happy to lend our support. We encourage any local businesses or organisations to sign up a relay team or train for the whole thing and raise money for Mencap. We promise money raised will be going towards a good cause.”
