With COVID-19 still raging, it’s a tricky time to be moving abroad or domestically. Since the situation is continuously developing, it can be hard to keep up to date. However, it’s important to prevent the pandemic from controlling your life. Hence, you’ll be glad to know that it’s still possible to move house during lockdown but be aware that certain countries are still implementing a travel ban. So, let’s get into it!
Situation in the UK
The first thing that you’ll need to understand is the situation in the UK, as this is where your moving journey will begin and, in some case, where it will end. For domestic moves, you’ll be happy to know that the government has some great advice on how to move house during COVID times. As we’re currently in a soft lockdown, it mainly boils down to taking all the measures you can to reduce the risk of infection when moving during the lockdown. Thus, for the best protection, continue to wash your hands thoroughly, wear a mask, and be sure to keep the 6ft distance when possible. Otherwise, it’s a perfectly ordinary move, just a bit more hygienic.
While moving domestically is easy, the whole ordeal becomes slightly more difficult when it comes to moving abroad during lockdown. For the most part, you can still move house in lockdown, but you just need to be prepared for the fact that some countries still have travel bans while others have certain requirements for entry, and speaking of these…
First, let’s talk about the bloc. In Europe, the only thing that you need to be able to move to Spain, France, or any other country in the union during lockdown is a either a negative covid PCR test or proof of being vaccinated. Pretty easy, right? Just don’t forget to sort out your visa as well!
Unless you happen to be an American citizen or hold a long-term permanent resident visa, you’ll find it hard to move your household to the USA during the lockdown. This is due to the UK being the on the banned countries list. And, sadly, there’s currently no plan by the America government to repeal the ban. So, unless you have a 14 day lay-over in a country from which entry to the States isn’t banned, you won’t be able to go. With that in mind, you can still visit the American government’s visa and travel FAQ page to monitor the situation for any further developments.
Much like America, Australia is closed to all those attempting to travel from abroad unless they are Australia citizens, permanent residents, or a foreign national who can secure an exemption that allows them to travel. Our advice is to try for an exemption as you have nothing to lose, but for the most part, you’ll likely have to put your move to Australia on the back burner until the situation improves. You can keep tabs on the situation here.
If you’re hoping to enter Canada, we’ve got great news! Since September 7th, people are allowed to enter the country as long as they have a full vaccination status 14 days prior to entry. If that includes you, you can start your move to the Great White North during lockdown. Score! If you’re still unsure, you can use this handy form to find out if you are allowed to enter Canada.
For any additional country that has not been mentioned here, you can find more information on the UK government’s foreign travel advice page. This page will continue to be updated as the situation evolves, and you will also be able to find even more useful advice about moving to any of the listed regions.
We’ve already mentioned some precaution that you can take during your move such as washing your hands, masking up, and keeping distance. However, there are some additional measures that you can take to ensure when moving home during lockdown to ensure that It’s the safest it can be. We’ve listed some for you below:
- Clean everything – Wash everything that can be washed with some nice, warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds to kill the virus.
- Open windows – The virus can build up in the air, so having the windows open will allow a current of fresh air to freshen the room which will help lower the risk of infection.
- Self-tests – This extra step will also give you some piece of mind. Through testing those present, you can send home those who are positive.
- Wear gloves – This might seem like overkill but requiring people to wear rubber gloves reduces the risk of transmission as well as paper cuts! Overall, our advice is to just make sure not to touch your face.
- Communication – It’s important to ensure that everyone is on board and following the same steps. A weak link means a broken chain.
