Music from the legendary Jacques Brel comes to Belfast
Blunt Fringe Theatre presents all-star production of Jacques Brel’s songs at Lyric Theatre
Next month Blunt Fringe theatre presents Jacques Brel is Alive & Well and Living in Paris, a revue of the music of one of the most enduring singer-songwriters of the last fifty years, and generally considered a master of the modern chanson. Jacques Brel (8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978) was a singer-songwriter who composed and performed thoughtful and theatrical songs that generated a large devoted following, initially in Belgium and France, and later throughout the world. Brel’s much-translated songs of love, death, bruised romance and equivocal cynicism have influenced generations of artists.
The off-Broadway musical review Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris will open at the Lyric Theatre Belfast on 11 November 2014 for a limited run until 15 November 2014.The production features a cast that includes stalwarts from the world of musical theatre including Philip Rham, Joanna Strand, Colette Lennon and Gerard McCabe, who between them have performed on the West End, on national tour, in film blockbusters and on TV.
While Jacques Brel is no longer alive, well or living in Paris, the singer-songwriter’s legendary vision of romance, humour and moral conviction endure. Each song in this contemporary musical revue tells a story and examines themes of love, war, being young and growing old but never forgetting that life, with all its tragedies and complexities, is filled with humour.
Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris is a powerful and bold theatrical experience that was an overwhelming success in its original off-Broadway production in 1968 and in subsequent runs in Sydney, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin. It is widely regarded as “Musical storytelling at its finest!” (The New York Post) and Time Out New York dubbed it “The best musical revue ever!”
It is the second show from the new theatre company, Blunt Fringe, based in Belfast and it follows on the heels of their inaugural critically acclaimed production of The World Goes ‘Round earlier this year which critics called ‘an outstanding cabaret show” (Belfast Telegraph) and “one of the best shows I’ve ever seen!” (Irish News).
