POP superstars JLS are backing a campaign to raise funds for a new therapeutic centre that will allow hundreds of local children with cancer and their families to enjoy free therapeutic short breaks.
When the boys heard about Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children’s plans to build the £3m state-of-the-art therapeutic short break centre in Newcastle, Co. Down, they decided to put on two very special gigs this summer before they split for good. The concerts will form part of a special programme of events that will run during the World Police and Fire Games.
Funds raised through ticket sales for the August 1 event which will take place at Newry’s Pairc Esler and the August 2 event which will take place at the Titanic Slipways will go towards the project. When building work is completed next spring, NICFC will be able to offer free relaxing and restorative short breaks to up to 500 local families per year affected by cancer.
As well as raising money through the concerts, the boys will take time out to attend a music workshop for children and young people with cancer.
NICFC’s CEO Gillian Creevy explained why a centre like Daisy Lodge is so vital and expressed her delight that JLS is supporting the project.

“We meet families every day who have spent many months on the hospital ward with their sick child or who have travelled relentlessly to and from their treatment centre week in week out for several years. We know they are exhausted and we know just how much a short break away from the pressures of everyday life can mean to them. We are delighted to be benefitting from such high profile concerts and welcome the band’s interest in meeting and working with local children and teenagers affected by cancer,” she said.

The band expressed their excitement at coming to Northern Ireland: “As a band we have always been very vocal about our support for children and young people who find themselves in difficult circumstances which is why we are so excited to perform in Belfast and Newry as part of Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children’s charity concert events. What makes the concerts even more special is the opportunity to perform during the 2013 World Police and Fire Games – we were blown away to find out it’s the third largest multi-sport event in the world! We can’t wait to play to competitors from all over the world and of course, our amazing Northern Ireland fans, at such iconic locations in what will be one of our last years together as a band.”
Tickets are a bargain at just £19.50pp.
