Action on Hearing Loss volunteer Nan Carville has been named as the joint winner of Belfast City Council’s ‘Making a Difference Award’, one of five categories in the Council’s Older Volunteer Awards.

The awards were presented by Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Hargey at a special event at Belfast City Hall on Wednesday 5 December.

Nan was also nominated for the ‘Participation award’ for the great breadth of activities which she has been involved in over the last ten years. Throughout her time with Action on Hearing Loss, she has volunteered as a befriender, campaigner, fundraiser, hearing aid support and information volunteer!

Kathy McCann, In Touch Manager, who made the nomination, said: “Nan’s lively sense of humour means any event she attends will always be an occasion. Through her self-deprecating stories, people who may be struggling with their hearing loss find it reassuring to know there is help available out there. By speaking in a way which is entirely relatable, they see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We have had fantastic feedback from all our service users who have benefited from her down to earth approach. Nan has made such a difference over the last ten years and thoroughly deserves to be recognised in this way.”

Nan said: “Today has been a memorable day in my life. Volunteering gives me a lot of satisfaction. I’ve met a lot of lovely people and Action on Hearing Loss has opened many doors. I find that with a hearing loss, I can empathise with others in a similar position and perhaps having a little bit of knowledge, I am able to assist people. I am both humbled and satisfied to have won this award today.”
