Belfast has been named as the UK’s sauciest city, with 14% of people being self-confessed sauce addicts, according to a new survey conducted by Premier Inn.

The survey also revealed that almost a sixth of people would refuse a bacon sandwich if it had no sauce, and one in ten would do the same for a fry up and was conducted by Premier Inn ahead of the hotel launching its new Purple Sauce across all its hotels and restaurants including seven hotels and eight restaurants in Northern Ireland.

Crafted with the help of expert chef Ed Baines, the Purple Sauce has been designed specifically for breakfast and is set to ‘shake up’ the hotel chain’s breakfast menu and get guests ready for the day ahead.

The sauce’s base is blackberry, and includes a range of natural ingredients – including cracked black pepper, crushed chillies, toasted cumin and smoked salt.  Its cleverly crafted flavours mean Purple Sauce goes perfectly with British sausages and tasty back bacon, whether on a full English or in a juicy sarnie.  It will also have no artificial colours or flavourings, is suitable for vegetarians and the purple is a natural shade that reflects its blackberry base.

Graeme Callender, Cluster Manager for Northern Ireland, commented:  “Three quarters of Premier Inn’s guests eat a full cooked breakfast and this is the reason why we decided to create a new dedicated breakfast sauce.  It’s clear that breakfast is front-of-mind for our guests and while we believe that a great day starts with a great night’s sleep, we also know a good breakfast sets you up perfectly for the day ahead.

“Since announcing the launch of our new limited edition Purple Sauce we have been delighted by the response and interest from customers.

“The sauce will be available in all of our hotels and restaurants and we really hope it will encourage even more people to join us for breakfast to give the Purple Sauce a try.”

Ed Baines commented: “Purple Sauce is the perfect accompaniment to a cooked breakfast.  Its smoky flavours really work well with meat – particularly pork – and its underlying fruity flavour is very satisfying.

“It’s been great working with Premier Inn to help create the sauce and I hope the public enjoy trying the new Purple Sauce.”

Purple Sauce has been created to complement Premier Inn’s extensive breakfast offering – including the full Premier Inn Breakfast, which is available from just £8.75
