Why Rory McIlroy Is the Leading Contender for the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow

Rory McIlroy returns to one of his most successful hunting grounds as he eyes up a fifth major title at this year’s US PGA Championship — and all signs point to another dominant display from the Northern Irish golf superstar.

Quail Hollow: McIlroy’s Playground

Set in Charlotte, North Carolina, Quail Hollow Club has practically become synonymous with McIlroy. With four wins at this iconic course — more than any other player — and holding the course record (an astonishing 61 in 2015), it’s no wonder fellow pro Jordan Spieth once joked it should be renamed the “Rory McIlroy Country Club.”

McIlroy first announced himself to the golfing world here in 2010, claiming victory at just 20 years old with a jaw-dropping weekend finish of 66 and 62. Since then, his love affair with Quail Hollow has only grown stronger.

Power Off the Tee: The Key to Rory’s Success

At 7,626 yards, Quail Hollow is a true test, but one that suits Rory’s strengths perfectly — particularly his prodigious power with the driver. His ability to take hazards out of play and attack long par-fours gives him a distinct edge over the field.

Despite hitting just over 50% of fairways during his 2023 win, McIlroy topped the strokes-gained tee stats and pulled away from the competition, finishing five shots clear of defending PGA Champion Xander Schauffele.

As Rory himself put it, “This is a course where you can hit driver often — and that plays right into my hands.”

Experience and Confidence in Charlotte

No player in this week’s PGA Championship field has as much experience — or as many positive memories — at Quail Hollow as McIlroy. From epic putts to commanding wins, Rory has consistently delivered here over the last 15 years.

He’s also deeply familiar with the local scene. With the event typically taking place in May, McIlroy has spent many birthdays in Charlotte and often speaks fondly of the city, the fans, and the energy they bring.

“I love coming back here,” he recently said. “This place just feels like home.”

A Course Built for a Comeback

The course itself has seen changes over the years — including a renovation before hosting the PGA in 2017 — but it’s since settled into a layout that suits McIlroy once again. While he didn’t contend that year, he’s since won twice more (2021 and 2023), reaffirming his status as the man to beat on this track.

This year, expect longer rough, a new tee box on the 9th, and softer green contours, adding challenge but also opening opportunities for bold play — something Rory thrives on.

Storms in the Forecast, but Calm for Rory?

With wet weather expected leading into the championship, course conditions may favour players who can launch it off the tee and hold soft greens. Again, advantage McIlroy.

Now free from the pressure of chasing the career Grand Slam — having added the Masters earlier this season — Rory comes into this event with confidence, form, and course history on his side.

Can Rory Equal Faldo’s Record?

A victory this week would move Rory McIlroy level with Sir Nick Faldo at six major titles — the most by any European player in the modern era.

As Rory himself put it: “There’s not a spot on this course I haven’t been. I know it well — and I know what to do.”

That knowledge, combined with his powerful game and emotional connection to Quail Hollow, makes him a clear favourite to lift the Wanamaker Trophy once again.
