Sunshine isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when planning a family break in the UK. We all know how notoriously wet and changeable the British weather can be!
But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some particularly sunny spots around the country that make them ideal for family breaks UK.
So, let’s look at which destinations in the UK can boast higher levels of sunshine and may give you some blue skies on your holiday.
1. The Isles of Scilly
At the top of our list is the Isles of Scilly, a cluster of small islands off the southwestern tip of Cornwall. This makes them the most southerly part of the county and means a better chance of warmer temperatures. They receive the highest number of sunshine hours than elsewhere in the UK.
The subtropical climate on the islands and crystal-clear waters of the surrounding sea helps Scilly feel almost like a different country.
Explore pristine beaches, or hop from island to island and search for signs of the local wildlife. You can also try out snorkelling and kayaking off the coast, basking in the sunshine.
2. The Isle of Wight
Another island, this one sitting just off the coast of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight also has plenty of sun to offer visitors.
In large part, this is thanks to the unique microclimate that helps the south of the Isle to feel more like the French Riviera than a part of Britain.
It’s a much larger area to explore, with the beaches and coastline complimented by the beauty of its rolling chalk downs.
You can spend your sunny days on the island cycling or hiking along some of its many scenic trails, enjoying views out over the English Channel.
3. Bournemouth
With seven miles of golden sands along its seafront, the town of Bournemouth is a popular destination for families who are looking to enjoy some sun and sea.
During the summer months, the town averages more than 7 hours of sunshine per day, so it’s no surprise that the beach is often busy.
The shallow slope of the beach makes it good for paddling, but there are also opportunities to try out surfing and paddleboarding off the shore.
In the town proper you can visit beautiful parks and gardens, among other family-friendly attractions, that everyone can enjoy in the sunshine.
4. The English Riviera
It can’t quite compare to Spain or France but the English Riviera is still a pleasant and sunny stretch of coastline. This part of southern Devon includes the seaside towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, where you can see plenty of palm trees in each of them.
With its higher rate of sunshine, the area is a great choice for family breaks and its wider area means that there’s a wealth of attractions to find here.
From zoos and aquariums to historic sites and theme parks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy down on the English Riviera.
5. Eastbourne
With a classic Victorian seafront, expansive promenade and some lovely beaches, Eastbourne is a natural holiday destination. This town on the East Sussex coast gets an average of more than 1,900 hours of sunshine per year, setting it apart from other options.
A stroll along the iconic Eastbourne Pier in the sunshine is sure to make anyone feel summery, especially if you treat yourselves to some chips.
Just a stone’s throw away, you can also take advantage of the sun to explore the South Downs National Park, which features some gorgeous scenery to soak in.
It might not be as much sun as you’d get in another country, but these five spots in the UK can still be sunny destinations that can make for great family breaks.
