At just 18 years old, Callum McCormick from Friends’ School Lisburn is already making a significant impact in his community. On Sunday 5 May, alongside his family, Callum and a group of 130 friends and supportive teachers from Friends’ School Lisburn will lace up their running shoes to participate in the Belfast City Marathon, all in aid of local depression charity AWARE NI and in loving memory of Callum’s brother, marking the anniversary of his passing.
The marathon holds a special significance for Callum, who has been training tirelessly alongside his best friend, Lucas, to tackle the entire 26.2 miles. Reflecting on his motivation for this challenge, Callum shares, “Taking on this challenge has given me something positive to focus on and has helped me manage my mental well-being after losing my brother, Euan.”

The team, comprising Callum, Lucas, Callum’s family, teachers and other classmates from Friends School Lisburn, embodies the spirit of camaraderie and community support. Callum expresses his gratitude for their involvement, stating, “My school has been great in supporting me and helping with my fundraising efforts. The generous donations from everyone so far have been incredible, and I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone for their kindness.”
Callum and his teammates have already raised an impressive £7,000, demonstrating the community’s generous support for his cause.
Lesley Wright, Community Fundraising Officer at AWARE NI, commends Callum and his team, stating, “We are deeply moved by Callum’s dedication to honouring his brother’s memory while supporting mental health awareness. The funds raised will make a tangible difference in our efforts to provide vital services to those in need.”
AWARE NI is a local charity that aims to support those affected by depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. AWARE NI offers valuable resources and services to the community through its peer-led support groups and education and training programmes. By participating in the Belfast City Marathon and fundraising for AWARE NI, Callum and his team are contributing to the ongoing efforts to promote mental health awareness and support those facing mental ill-health.
As the team prepares to take on the challenge, Callum encourages everyone to join them in their mission. “It’s important to do something positive when times are difficult as it not only improves your own mental health but also helps those around you. Every step we take in this marathon is not just for ourselves but for all those who are struggling with mental health issues.”
To support Callum and his team in their marathon relay and contribute to AWARE NI, donations can be made through Callum’s fundraising page here.
