‘WhatsApp Gold’ virus returns

Smartphone users across the Uk are being warned to watch out for a new scam.

Fraudsters are trying to trick WHatsapp users and authorities urging vigilance.

WhatsApp users have started to receive an invitation to install a “limited edition” version of the popular messaging app called WhatsApp Gold.

The upgrade claims to offer new features such as the ability to have video chats, send 100 pictures at once, and delete messages after you have sent them.

Users are then asked to click on a link to download the update.

The message invites users to click a link to download the upgrade, which then directs them to a website where malicious software will install a virus on their phone. What to do if you receive the scam message If you receive the message, it is advised that you do not click the link to sign up up to for the fake upgrade, and instead delete the message from your phone. Only one version of WhatsApp exists and updates are usually done automatically through the app itself.
