The Nick Park creations will be used in a £4 million drive – including an animated film – led by VisitEngland, the official tourist board. The campaign is also backed by the tourist boards of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and various tour operators, including Superbreak, Bourne Leisure and Shearings Holidays, who hope visitors inspired by the short films will book through them. Called the “Great Adventure” campaign, the film will show cheese-loving Wallace and his faithful companion Gromit – among Britain’s most recognisable comic creations – roaming the country and stopping at some of the best tourist attractions.
James Berresford, the VisitEngland chief executive said: “Wallace and Gromit are wonderful ambassadors for holidays at home.
“They are a quintessentially English double-act with universal appeal at home and abroad, and I’m sure they will capture the public’s imagination.”
The pair will appear in a television advertisement for the first time on Sunday (May 12).
This campaign is part of the government-funded “Holidays at Home are GREAT” strategy, and is designed to increase spending on domestic tourism by £80million.
