His First Home Game as Assistant Coach
Jimmy Duffy expressed his excitement about his first home game, describing it as an incredible experience. “It was brilliant to be in the coach’s box and hear such a noisy crowd on my side for a change. It was great to start the season with a win against high-quality opposition,” he said, noting the electric atmosphere and the ideal start to the campaign.
Why He Joined Ulster’s Coaching Team
When asked about his decision to join Ulster, Duffy explained that it was an easy choice. “It’s a massive club with a rich history, and Richie (Murphy) and I have always had an honest relationship. He told me it’s a young, exciting squad with huge potential.” Duffy is particularly impressed with the youth in the team, stating, “A lot of our players are in their early twenties, and if we support them, they could be with the squad for the next ten or twelve years.”
He also touched on the balance of experience within the squad, highlighting how the more seasoned players are embracing their roles as mentors.
Adapting to Player Absences
Losing players to the Emerging Ireland squad has posed challenges, but Duffy remains optimistic. “We aim to build a team that can remain consistent, even with changes. You can’t rely on the same players all the time; it’s about giving others the chance to step up.”
Marty Moore’s Retirement
Reflecting on Marty Moore’s retirement, Duffy said, “Though I’ve only just arrived, it’s clear that Marty leaves a lasting legacy. It’s disappointing to lose him, but his decision is what’s best for him and his family.”
Impact of the Home Crowd
Duffy acknowledged the influence of the passionate Ulster crowd, describing them as knowledgeable and dedicated. “The team feeds off the energy from the stands; it’s part of the club’s DNA.”
Preparing for South Africa
Looking ahead to the South Africa trip, Duffy emphasized the challenge ahead. “Altitude is a big factor, and the Lions are dangerous, especially on counter-attacks. We have to be accurate and minimize mistakes. It’ll be a real test to face a team that finished last season so strongly.”
John Andrew on…
Victory Over Glasgow
John Andrew shared his thoughts on Ulster’s recent win over Glasgow. “It was a mix of excitement and relief. We didn’t play our best, but we found a way to win and defended well at the end. Winning ugly still gives us confidence, but we know we need to improve, especially with the challenges of South Africa ahead.”
The South Africa Experience
Andrew explained how the upcoming South Africa trip differs from typical away matches. “It’s a longer trip—around twelve days—and we’ll be together constantly. While it’s fun, there’s no chance to just go home and unwind. But the travel looks good, with no stopovers, and we always enjoy our time there.”
Game-Time Mindset
On managing his own game-time, Andrew takes a focused approach. “I don’t look too far ahead. I’m happy to play whenever and just focus on performing well each time.”
Marty Moore’s Retirement
Andrew also spoke about Moore’s departure. “Marty was not only a great player but a great person. He’ll be missed, both on and off the field. At times, he was the best tighthead in the world, and he’s leaving a huge gap in our squad.”
Werner Kok on…
Kingspan Stadium Atmosphere
Werner Kok was full of praise for the crowd at Kingspan Stadium. “It was insane. I was on the bench for the first 60 minutes, and I was shaking with excitement! When I finally got onto the field, I couldn’t even hear my teammates because the crowd was so loud.”
A Fun Moment with a Fan
Kok shared a humorous moment from the game, recalling how he spotted someone in the crowd dressed like him. “I found my twin in the stands! I hope he comes to every game dressed like that!”

Team Confidence
After a tough win against the reigning champions, Kok believes the team is in a good place. “There’s always pressure when you face the champions, but winning the way we did has boosted our confidence. We know we have things to work on, but we fought hard for each other, and that says a lot about this team.”
Facing the Lions in South Africa
Kok is well aware of the challenge ahead in Johannesburg. “The altitude and heat will be tough to handle. We’ve got a plan in place, and we’ll need to capitalize on any chances we get.”
With the upcoming clash against the Emirates Lions, the Ulster squad is well aware of the challenges but is equally confident and prepared.
