Ulster Rugby are through to the European Challenge Cup final after a powerful 29–12 win over Exeter Chiefs, moving to within one game of their first major trophy in two decades.

From the first whistle to the final roar, this felt like a side growing into something serious.

Pressure, Nerves… Then the Breakthrough

At Kingspan Stadium, the early stages were tense rather than flowing.

Both teams brought intensity, but chances came and went. Ulster thought they had made the breakthrough early on, only to see it chalked off — a moment that summed up a scrappy opening spell.

Eventually, the pressure told.

Juarno Augustus crashed over to open the scoring after sustained attacking phases, giving the home crowd something to lift the noise. Exeter responded not long after, keeping things tight and ensuring this was far from straightforward.

Even when reduced to 14 men, Ulster refused to retreat. A late penalty nudged them ahead at the break — a small lead, but an important one.

Ulster Find Another Gear

Whatever was said at half-time worked.

Ulster came out sharper, faster, and far more clinical.

Jack Murphy finished off a slick move out wide to extend the lead, and from there, the game began to tilt decisively. David McCann powered over next, rewarding a dominant spell that saw Ulster camped deep in Exeter territory.

Then came the moment that put daylight between the sides — a textbook rolling maul, driven over the line and finished by Tom Stewart.

At that point, Ulster were in control — and they didn’t let it slip.

Control, Composure, and a Statement Win

Exeter kept battling and grabbed a late score, but the outcome never truly felt in doubt.

Ulster managed the closing stages with maturity, controlling possession and territory, showing a level of composure that has sometimes been questioned in recent seasons.

This time, there was no wobble.

A Young Side Stepping Up

There’s a different feel around this Ulster team.

Under Richie Murphy, a younger squad is starting to come together at exactly the right moment. There’s energy, confidence, and — crucially — belief.

Players across the pitch delivered:

  • Nathan Doak dictated tempo and kept things ticking
  • The forwards laid the platform with physical dominance
  • The backline took their chances when they came

It wasn’t perfect — but it was controlled, and it was effective.

Bilbao Awaits

Next stop: Bilbao.

Ulster will face either Montpellier or Dragons on 22 May, with silverware now firmly within reach. For a club that hasn’t lifted a major trophy since 2006, this is more than just another final — it’s an opportunity to change the narrative.

Love Belfast Take

This wasn’t just a win — it was a message.

Ulster didn’t panic under pressure, didn’t fade when tested, and didn’t let the occasion get the better of them.

Now, one final step remains.

Belfast will be watching.
