Dr. Martens has announced the three Ulster University students who have won the chance to have their creative work on display to the public in its flagship Northern Ireland store.
In October, Dr. Martens teamed up with the university’s Belfast School of Art to set foundation year students a project brief to design an outfit that stands for the city’s musical and cultural history.
Over 60 young designers on the university’s Art and Design BDes (Hons) course took on the challenge to visualise the brand’s current #STANDFORSOMETHING campaign on a local level.
Claire Mooney was named as the overall winner of the design project, who will also receive an outfit of her choice from the store on Cornmarket, and Aimee Harkin and Bethany Millican were selected as runners-up.
Dr. Martens UK retail marketing manager Amy Nelson said: “We were really impressed with the students’ interpretations of our ‘STANDFORSOMETHING campaign, taking into account Belfast’s history to design an outfit for the Northern DMs fan.
“It’s fantastic to see a younger generation engaging with the brand ethos in the same way Docs’ wearers did decades ago. It was clear that Claire had really delved into Ulster punk, rebellious subcultures that are part of Dr. Martens’ heritage and iconic imagery of Belfast – such as the Harland and Wolff cranes.”
Ulster University fashion lecturer Stephen King, said: “There was a real buzz around the project throughout and a great response with a large number of students getting really stuck in.
“Claire, Aimee and Bethany are looking forward to being able to show off their work to the public, and their friends and family. It’s certainly got them thinking about what they will specialise in as they progress through the course, giving them a taste of fashion design to appeal to a mass market for the likes of the Dr. Martens’ customer.”
The students’ designs will be on display in Dr. Martens’ first standalone Belfast store in February.
