We all love Belfast, don’t we? This is especially true when it comes to the camaraderie experienced by the locals when watching or participating in sport. And when you live in or around our country’s capital, there’s always something sporty to involve yourself with. Whether you want to play, spectate, or place a bet, you’ll have no problem finding something in Belfast to tickle your fancy.

In this post, we’re going to run through some of the sporting events available in Belfast over the next couple of months. We’re sure you’ll find some fine matches, races, and other activities to keep you properly entertained as winter starts creeping in.

Horseracing – Friday, 15 September: Downpatrick Racecourse

Downpatrick Racecourse is only a mile from the centre of the historical town of Downpatrick. The venue has hosted horseracing for over 150 years! It’s a great place to bring your family or socialise with friends while placing your bets and enjoying the action. The course is only about 20 miles from Belfast, so you can enjoy a scenic road trip on the way out of the city.

There’s more racing on 6 October too. Dress casually or in theme for this end-of-season event – there is no dress code. There’s also no shortage of festive entertainment after the racing either. Live music is on offer after both days for those looking to celebrate their winnings. Relax afterwards to the live sounds with some food, beverages and good company to complete a fun day out.

Running – Sunday, 17 September: Mash Direct Belfast Half-Marathon

Starting and ending at the Ormeau Park Embankment, participants run through all four Belfast districts. As the largest half-marathon in Northern Ireland, tickets are always in demand. In fact, they’ve sold out for the last four years.

Booking is necessary, but even if you can’t get a ticket, the race is a fun event to watch. Think about it: you can munch down on a hearty take-out breakfast while others are sweating! The race starts at 9 am.

Football – Saturday, 14 October – Northern Ireland v San Marino, UEFA Euro Qualifying

Northern Ireland takes on minnows San Marino at Windsor Park in Belfast, kicking off at 2 pm. At the time of writing, our lads haven’t made the best of starts, losing their first two fixtures.

Despite this, the odds offered on the hosts against San Marino will likely be favourable, especially on the number of goals. San Marino have famously had some bad defeats, including England’s 10-0 and more recently Finland’s 6-0. Northern Ireland’s last meeting with San Marino ended 2-0, with many fans and punters hoping for an even bigger victory in October. An in-depth analysis of betting platforms nearer the time will allow you to find the betting site offering the best odds on the event.

We hope that, by the time this fixture arrives, Northern Ireland have picked up some vital points against Slovenia and Kazakhstan away from home. Whatever the case, the team needs your support, so pop down to Windsor Park and enjoy the footie!

Football – Tuesday, 17 October – Northern Ireland vs Slovenia, UEFA Euro Qualifying

Our national footballers first play Slovenia away from home on 7 September. Hopefully, we won’t be looking for revenge in this return encounter at Windsor Park. Instead, hold your thumbs we’ll already have three extra points in the bag!

Whatever the case, the 7.45 pm starting time for the match means there’s enough time to get home from work and prepare. You can get washed, fed and dressed, and still place your bets before heading on through to Windsor Park.

Golf – Starts Wednesday, 18 October: The Great North Links Challenge

Avid golfers have the opportunity to play three Irish Open links golf courses between 18 and 20 October. The 2023 Great North Links Challenge takes place at the Glashedy Links at Ballyliffin, the Royal Portrush Dunluce Links, and the Strand Links at Portstewart.

To take part in this prestigious three-day event, you’ll have to enter a team of four. The tournament cost is £270 per golfer, qualifying you to compete for both team and individual prizes.

Snooker – Starts Sunday, 22 October: Northern Ireland Open

Top snooker comes to the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, beginning on Sunday, 22 October and ending the following Sunday, the 29th. The matches come thick and fast over eight full days of top-class snooker, so take a day or two’s leave and watch the action.

The second weekend features the latter stages of tournament play, but the Waterfront Hall seats will fill quickly. If you’re keen on some top potting and snookering, don’t delay in getting your tickets.

Rugby Union – Sunday, 29 October: Ulster vs. The Bulls, United Rugby Championship

Ravenhill Stadium in Belfast welcomes The Bulls from South Africa in a URC encounter against Ulster RC, kicking off at 5 pm. The last Belfast meeting between the two teams resulted in a 32-23 win for the home side, but it could have gone either way.

The Bulls are never easy to beat. If you’re looking for some competitive odds, you should investigate your chosen sportsbook’s listings for this one. There’s lots of rugby still coming in Belfast in 2023, so get yourself in the mood by booking for the clash soon.

Final Words

There’s enough sporting action listed above to keep you out and about in Belfast for most of the next two months. Whether you’re an active or passive sportsperson, the thrill of sinking a 20-foot putt or watching your favourite player score for his country is seldom beaten. If you’re not the sporty type, try getting involved – you’ll never know the feeling until you do.
