Last night, I took a quick trip into Belfast to see Callings, directed by Paula McFetridge and performed at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast. I went with no expectations and was blown away. I saw was a powerful exploration of community and resilience among LGBTQ+ individuals in the 1970s. The play follows five queer characters who find solace through the Cara-Friend befriending service, offering a poignant glimpse into a time when many lived hidden lives in Northern Ireland.
I found the performances remarkable. Each cast member brought a depth and authenticity to their roles, drawing me into their emotional journeys. A standout moment was a heartfelt rendition of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” which culminated in an unexpected kiss, beautifully encapsulating the themes of love and defiance.

At its core, Callings expresses the transformative power of connection, illustrating how even the simplest gestures can change lives. In an era when governmental forces sought to quash their existence, these moments of camaraderie became acts of resistance. Through disco at Queens University and standing up to the army or RUC, individuals who thought they were alone found a home. The play thoughtfully reflects on historical challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating the progress made while reminding us of the courage required to forge a path forward.
The emotional journey of the play had me both laughing and crying, instilling a sense of hope that ordinary individuals can indeed be heroes capable of changing the world. I wholeheartedly recommend Callings; it is a beautifully crafted production that not only entertains but also inspires reflection on the importance of community and the ongoing fight for acceptance.

In the words echoed in the play, “Someone out there has been plucking up the courage for god knows how long; tonightthey’ll pick up the phone and you’ll be there for them.” This sentiment resonates long after the curtain falls.
