The timeless children’s classic, The Velveteen Rabbit, has charmed generations with its heartwarming tale of love, imagination, and the magic of becoming real. Now, this beloved story has been beautifully re-imagined for the stage by award-winning writer Jan Carson and renowned composer Duke Special in an all-new original musical. As part of the Belfast Children’s Festival, The Velveteen Rabbit will run from 14 – 30 March 2025 at the Lyric Theatre, bringing a spellbinding experience to audiences of all ages.
A Classic Tale, Reimagined for the Stage
Inspired by the story that helped shape the hit Disney-Pixar Toy Story franchise, The Velveteen Rabbit follows the journey of Wee Man, a young boy who receives a soft toy bunny as a gift. What begins as a simple present soon transforms into an extraordinary adventure, as Nursery Magic breathes life into the Velveteen Rabbit and takes them on a journey where the ordinary becomes truly unforgettable.
This enchanting musical adaptation features an original score by Duke Special, whose signature style blends folk, theatrical flair, and a touch of whimsy, bringing the world of the nursery to life in a way that will delight both young and old.
An Inclusive Theatre Experience for Everyone
The Velveteen Rabbit has been specially adapted to ensure that every audience member can fully enjoy the magic of this production. Every performance will be relaxed and captioned, making it accessible to those with sensory sensitivities, while additional signed and audio-described performances will be available, ensuring inclusivity for all.
With vibrant costumes, playful choreography, and larger-than-life characters, audiences will meet an unforgettable cast including Jack (In The Box), Robbo The Robot, and other delightful nursery friends.
“We’re going to have so many adventures together. Just you and me, bunny. We’ll be best friends. Sidekicks. We are going to have the most fun ever.”
A Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes
With rehearsals in full swing, excitement is building as the cast and creative team prepare to bring this enchanting world to life. The nursery has been taken over by playful energy as the actors step into their roles, transforming into their whimsical, toy-inspired characters.
