The cucumber and egg diet restricts carbohydrates in order to stimulate ketosis – when your body burns fat instead of sugars for energy. Theoretically, this should help people lose weight by cutting out sugar cravings and appetite-stimulating foods such as refined carbs, fruits and sweets while preventing overeating on protein-rich foods such as meat or eggs which are high in quality but low in volume. However in reality, it may not give the expected results for various reasons, which we’ll discuss in this article.
What Is The Cucumber and Egg Diet?
The cucumber and egg diet is one of many so-called “detox” diets which are popular these days. Detoxes are usually short term plans where participants eat only low-calorie foods or food groups in order to cleanse their bodies of toxins or excess water while they go through other healthful practices like exercise or colonics/ enemas. Most people who follow these detoxes do so for a set period of time before returning to normal eating patterns.
On this plan, you’ll eat cucumbers each day, along with eggs which are allowed in unlimited amounts. Green-leaf vegetables are also allowed in unlimited quantities too. Small quantities of other foods are included in this diet plan. There are no clear guidelines on which beverages you can take, but it’s assumed that water is the best choice.
Foods To Eat on The Diet Plan
Certain foods are allowed on the diet plan. These include:
- Cucumbers
- Eggs
- All green vegetables including kale, cabbage, spinach, broccoli and more
- Dairy Products like milk or yoghurt (as long as they don’t contain sweeteners)
- Whole wheat bread (without syrup or sugar added), or brown rice
- Lean meats like skinless chicken or turkey
- Nuts are allowed in small quantities too.
Foods To Avoid on The Diet Plan
Many foods must be avoided while you’re following this diet plan when they include:
- Fried foods, including fast food fries which are high in trans fats
- Highly processed foods that contain preservatives or other additives
- Desserts, candy and other sugary treats. Even fruit juices should be avoided because of their sugar content.
Does the Diet Work?
Many people have taken to this diet due to its simple rules and its ability to help one drop pounds instantly. Some even praise the fact that they don’t have hunger pains while following the cucumber and egg diet–but how does it work?
This diet plan works well at first because it’s low calorie. It provides less than 600 calories per day so weight loss is likely to occur quickly. Participants might also lose some inches around their waist from the lack of fat in this diet plan. However, since its only lasting benefits are short-term, it probably won’t help you lose a ton of weight.
The truth is, the only thing you’ll be dropping are water pounds. Since eggs are high in citric acid, your body will shed excess sodium from your cells from a combination of drinking more water and eating fewer salt-heavy foods like processed meats.
Meanwhile, veggies contain a lot of fiber which binds up excess calories as you digest them, making you feel full for longer periods of time. All together these factors make up simple calorie reduction–which in turn will cause weight loss.
However, diets like these are bound to fail in the long run since you’re missing out on valuable nutrients that your body needs to function properly.
Consuming only vegetables and protein while skipping out on carbs and healthy fats is a very bad idea. The egg section of this diet focuses on protein consumption which is great, but it doesn’t mention anything about the fat content of eggs. Eating too much fat can lead to high cholesterol levels, heart disease, weight gain and other health issues.
The Bottom Line
Aside from being unhealthy, the cucumber and egg diet is also not sustainable for multiple reasons. First, it’s very restrictive which will lead to binging when you return to your normal eating patterns. Second, the cucumber and egg diet only lasts for seven days; that means that trying to extend this diet into multiple weeks or months is not practical. And lastly, many people find themselves feeling unfocused after following such a restrictive meal plan for an extended amount of time. If you want to lose weight, your best bet is to follow a strict workout routine combined with a balanced diet.
