Hundreds of young children from across Belfast took place in a Summer Sports Day at Olympia leisure centre today.
The children have been attending the city’s Better Summer schemes at nine leisure centres run by social enterprise GLL. The Summer Sports Day marks the end of this year’s schemes.
Children who participated in the Sports Day celebrated making new friends and got the chance to try out six different sports from tennis to rugby to basketball, as part of the leisure centres’ summer sports activities.
The young budding ‘olympians’ were also joined on the day by some of the city’s most promising young athletes who are supported by the GLL Sport Foundation as part of the social enterprise’s commitment to nurturing local sports talent. They included Paralympian Dr Michael McKillop and Commonwealth boxer James McGivern.
Gareth Kirk, GLL Regional Director said:
“Our aim is to encourage as many children as possible to participate in physical activity and ignite their passion for sports. We’ve spent the last few weeks with these kids in their local areas and wanted to mark the end of a great summer scheme by bringing them altogether at Olympia to have a bit of fun and try out a range of different sporting activities.
“Our Sports Foundation athletes have also been on hand to day to inspire our summer scheme participants and show them how exciting it can be to get involved in sport.”
The summer scheme provides the opportunity for those involved to link in with local sports clubs and community groups in their area by bringing children together from all across the city.
Better Leisure Centres in Belfast have a range of summer activities on offer including Kids Swim For A Quid, Wibit Aqua fun sessions and Junior gym memberships. For more information visit
