Streetwise Circus is celebrating 20th Anniversary. Formed by 12 circus artists in 1996 with the aim to make circus skills accessible to people throughout Northern Ireland, irrespective of gender, age, disability, or economic, religious or cultural background, by providing circus workshops throughout the community run by teams of experienced tutors.
Since then they have expanded to 25 tutors providing 400 workshops a year across Northern Ireland leading on to numerous performances by our participants.
Their focus is primarily on something called social circus which is the use of circus arts as mediums for social justice and social good. They have a number of projects currently running, for example Evergreen group which includes those with disability and mental health issues, the Age-ility group for the over 55’s which aims to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing of older people, our hat-trick project for the unemployed and homeless, our youth circus and we have recently been one of four Arts groups in the UK to receive substantial funding from Spirit of 2012 towards our Circus Aurora project. Circus Aurora is a province-wide project which aims to bring circus to older people and those with disability or mental health issues.
In celebration of 20 years hard work they are holding a “Streetwise Bonanza” on 23rdApril at the MAC, which includes a show by the Evergreen Group called The Wedding Presence (seen in the Bounce Festival last year), Circus Workshops for all to try, a free show by the youth circus and a Gala show which includes performances from many of our groups and some of their tutors professional acts.
