Tommy Fleetwood clinched the decisive point, leading Team Europe to a thrilling 16.5-11.5 victory in Rome, overcoming Team USA’s spirited final-round comeback. Europe, under the guidance of Luke Donald, established dominance with an undefeated start and expanded their lead in the Saturday foursomes. However, Team USA narrowed Europe’s lead to five, following a tense fourballs session, setting the stage for an intense Sunday singles at Marco Simone GC.
To recapture the trophy, Europe needed four points and moved nearer to this goal with Viktor Hovland’s win over Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm’s crucial tie against Scottie Scheffler. Rory McIlroy’s defeat of Sam Burns brought Europe tantalizingly close to victory.
Despite Patrick Cantlay scoring the first point of the day for America by overcoming Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton’s subsequent win against Brian Harman extended Europe’s tally to 14 points, prolonging Team USA’s three-decade-long pursuit of an away Ryder Cup win.
Team USA, with victories from Max Homa, Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele, and Justin Thomas, managed to reduce the lead. However, Europe sealed their seventh consecutive home victory when Fleetwood delivered a spectacular tee shot at the 17th par-three, achieving a 3&1 win over Rickie Fowler.

Fleetwood expressed his relief and excitement, stating, “I didn’t want to see it go down to one of the last few of us.” He eagerly anticipated celebrating with the team, captain, and their families. “Being part of this victory is so fulfilling and being part of this team is something I’m incredibly proud of. Achieving this with such an amazing group has been an extraordinary experience; it’s the ultimate high.”
