Ulster Rugby has officially announced that Rory Best, the former club and Ireland captain, has been appointed as the new General Manager, marking the return of one of the most respected figures in Irish sport to the heart of the province.

A Leader Returns Home

A product of the Ulster Rugby pathway, Rory Best made 219 appearances for his home province between 2004 and 2019, leading Ulster with distinction before hanging up his boots. On the international stage, he earned 124 caps for Ireland, captaining his country to historic victories — including the unforgettable 2018 Grand Slam.

Now, he’s back at Affidea Stadium, not as a player, but as a leader shaping the next era of Ulster Rugby.

In his new role, Rory will oversee professional rugby operations, player development, and performance pathways, bringing his trademark passion, discipline, and understanding of Ulster’s DNA to every decision.

A Perfect Fit for the Province

Ulster Rugby CEO Hugh McCaughey described the appointment as a landmark moment:

“Rory’s appointment is a landmark moment for Ulster Rugby. He is a figure who commands enormous respect across the game, not just for his achievements but for the way he represents this club and province. Bringing Rory back into the fold is not just about his leadership, but also about reconnecting with the values and identity that have always made Ulster special.”

Following his retirement, Rory stayed closely connected to leadership and business, most recently working with The Ardonagh Group, where he applied the same strategic mindset and people-first approach that defined his rugby career.

Rory Best on His Return

Speaking about his new role, Rory Best said:

“Ulster Rugby has been a huge part of my life, and it’s an incredible honour to return in this capacity. I know what this club means to the players, the staff, our supporters, and sponsors. I’m excited to play a role in helping Ulster achieve its potential, building on the strong foundations that are already in place.”

For Ulster fans, this is more than just a leadership appointment — it’s a homecoming.

Experience, Passion, and Pride

Few players have embodied the Ulster spirit quite like Rory Best. From his debut in 2004 to his final bow in 2019, he was the definition of consistency, humility, and heart. His leadership both on and off the field has always been grounded in authenticity — a quality that will serve Ulster well in this new chapter.

As General Manager, Rory brings not only world-class experience but also the same values that made him a fan favourite: commitment, integrity, and pride in the jersey.

A New Chapter Begins

This appointment marks a turning point for Ulster Rugby — a move that blends heritage with forward-thinking ambition.

Rory Best knows what Ulster stands for, what it means to wear the jersey, and what it takes to win. His return feels like the start of something very special for the province.
