Few productions can capture the raw emotion, scale, and intensity of War Horse, and this latest staging proves why it remains one of the most powerful pieces of theatre ever created. From stunning puppetry to impeccable performances, it’s a show that grabs you from the opening moment and never lets go.

The heart of the production is, of course, Joey, the beloved horse at the center of Michael Morpurgo’s story. The puppetry, brought to life by the Handspring Puppet Company, is nothing short of extraordinary. The way Joey moves, breathes, and reacts is so realistic that you quickly forget there are puppeteers controlling him. Every flick of his ears, every shift of his weight, and even the sounds of his breath make him feel completely alive.

The story follows Albert (Tom Sturgess), who raises Joey from a foal, only to lose him when his father sells him to the cavalry at the start of World War I. Determined to reunite with his beloved horse, Albert enlists and embarks on a journey through the battlefields of France. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, filled with heartbreak, hope, and moments of sheer theatrical magic.

A Masterclass in Stagecraft
The set design is beautifully simple yet effective, using stunning projections on a torn sketchbook page to transport the audience from the rolling fields of Devon to the brutal trenches of France. Lighting and sound design also play a huge role, immersing the audience in the sights and sounds of war without ever overwhelming the human (and equine) drama at its heart.

A Few Galloping Missteps
While the production is undeniably spectacular, some storylines felt rushed. The subplot involving the German captain and the French family lacked the emotional depth of other parts of the show, and I personally felt that the film adaptation handled these elements with more nuance. Likewise, the ending felt slightly abrupt compared to the emotional weight the rest of the production carried—I preferred the way the movie resolved the story.

A Must-See Experience
That said, War Horse remains an astonishing achievement in theatre, delivering a deeply moving story through a unique blend of performance, design, and technical brilliance. It’s easy to see why this production has captivated audiences worldwide—it’s not just a play; it’s an experience.
The standing ovation at the end was well deserved, and if you haven’t seen War Horse yet, this is your chance to witness one of the most breathtaking productions in modern theatre. Highly recommended.
