It certainly is a “big bright beautiful world” if you catch the performance of “Shrek the Musical” by the BSPA Junior Summer Youth Project 2023 in Stranmillis Theatre, Belfast. A heart-warming evening being amazed by the enthusiasm and exceptional talent of our local young people. You will leave your troubles “far far away” as everyone’s favourite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairy-tale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. “Shrek the musical Jr” is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. Part romance and part twisted fairy-tale; Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with the powerful message that being different is okay!

Shrek the Musical is the story of a hulking green ogre who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anything that crosses his path, retreats to an ugly green swamp to exist in happy isolation. Suddenly, a gang of homeless fair-tale characters (Pinocchio, Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, you name it) raid his sanctuary, saying they’ve been evicted by the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad. Shrek strikes a deal. “I’ll get your home back if you give me my home back!” But when Shrek and Lord Farquaad meet, the Lord strikes a deal of his own: He’ll give the Fairy-tale characters their home back if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona. Shrek obliges yet finds something appealing – something strange and different – about this pretty princess. He likes her a lot! But why does she always run off when the sun sets?
