The New Lyric Operatic Company took to the stage in whipcrackin’ glory.
After seeing last year’s Fiddler on the roof, I was excited about this show and I was not disapointed.
Their young and talented cast really brought a lively performance and the chorus was particularly successful.
Calamity Jane “Ciara Mackey” commanded the stage with her interpretation of this feisty tomboy. She was accompanied by her best friend , Miss Katie Brown “Raya Smyth”, who sung wonderfully.
Lt Danny Gilmartin “Ross Chambers” and Wild Bill Hickock “Karl McGuckin” fought to win the heart of Katie Brown. Wild Bill’s scenes with Calamity Jane made this character come to life. Both Karl and Ciara were the stars of the show. I was very impressed. The pair worked well together, producing a passionate and funny version of “I Can Do Without You”
The colourful can-can dancers were full of energy and excitement and were followed by “Ande Gray” who played both Miss Frances Fryer and Mr Francis Fryer spectacularly… easily the funniest moment in the show.
Henry “Millie” Miller was a nervous, bumbling wreck who added much hilarity when he had unhappy customers. Rattlesnake was a very convincing drunk.
The staging fully utilised the space and the orchestra with Wilson Shields brought the songs to life. My only criticism was off the Grand Opera House staff, who continually talked throughout the last part of the show which was very distracting.
This was a bright and cheerful production of a much-loved musical and fully deserved their standing ovation. Well done!
Whip crack-away!, Whip crack-away!, Whip crack-away!
