More than 350 athletes from across Northern Ireland turned out at the Mary Peters track to compete in the opening event of the 2014 firmus energy Super Five Series.

Organised by Lagan Valley Athletics Club, this is the largest youth athletics series in NI and it is designed to encourage beginners to come out and ‘have a go’ at track and field events as well as helping to develop serious global competitors and future local Olympians.

In total 357 athletes were able to compete in a selection of sporting activities including the hammer, shot putt, long jump, javelin, high jump and the 80/100m sprint. Record numbers of athletes turned out for the event last week which is testament to the increased popularity of athletics among the youth.

Now in its 24th year, the popularity of the long-standing initiative has gone from strength to strength and over the five different ‘meets’ it will attract more than 750 young people from across Northern Ireland.

Bryan McCorkall from Lagan Valley Athletics Club commented, “I would like to say a big thank you to all those who attended our first event of the series this year and helped to make it one of the best so far! It is great to see the excitement and enthusiasm from the athletes, especially from those who are new to the sport. We also have very dedicated serious competitors that take part and it is impressive to see how much they have improved even since last year’s series – there are definitely some future professional contenders.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank local natural gas supplier, firmus energy, who has newly come on board this year. The firm has already been a great support to the series and was integral in developing our new online registration system which has been a great success to date.

“The online registration is now open for the next event in the series which will take place on 1 May. Anyone aged from eight years old is able to take part, ranging from first-timers and beginners through to serious competitors.”
